Hi,

you may have noticed by now I have a brand new Nokia 6310i :-)

This offers both GPRS and HSCSD (high speed data at 28.8k).

Orange suggest that you use GPRS if you want to get fast delivery of incoming text emails but use HSCSD for anything with larger data volumes, such as pictures or email attachments.

So how much use is GPRS (leaving aside the issue of how you filter your email so you only get small messages)?

You can normaly get email alerts via SMS, and polling every 20 minutes via HSDC isn't going to cost vast amounts.

It sounds as if GPRS (at least as deployed by Orange) is for small amounts of data only.

Cheers
Dave R

LittleGreyCat, it's a strange statement from Orange, but it can be true - sometimes.

GPRS provides higher speed than HSCSD, without you having to pay the minutes (or using your included minutes if any).

On the other hand it has a higher latency making browing web pages with lots of different components a real pain. This is because of the multiple connections required to download each item in a page's content.

However, it performs best exactly on Instant Messaging (short bursts) or e-mails (single connections).

Of course GPRS can be influenced the the number of simultaneous users connected at that very moment. And I've heard that in Europe things are getting a little jammed.
