I have had the same mobile phone number for about 15 years and would like to keep it forever. So does number portability mean that you can move your 021 number from Vodafone to 2 degrees, and back again if it doesn't work out with 2 degrees?
Does number portability rely on goodwill from the telco, or is it a neutral, accepted way of doing things between telcos?
By number portabilty I mean keeping the 021 part of the number as well.

Yes, Sort of, Yes

Some providers are fast and efficient at porting numbers and some a really slow and pathetic.

Correct. Have in mind that you request the port to your new provider and they will manage the process. NEVER close the account on the old provider because this will automatically release the number and you won't get it back. The account will be closed when the porting is completed.

You can call AFTER the number is live on the new provider to check that the account is actually closed but don't do anything before the number is working on the new network.

Ditto to Mauricio's comments above. Your number is your number and you can take it wherever you like.
Regarding the actual porting process itself. With 2degrees you manage this process yourself via our website. Other providers require you to go into a store and fill out forms.

Because the 2degrees process is all online we've noticed that for the majority of our customers the number is ported over within an hour - but we say that it could be as long as one business day as it does need inter operator connectivity to ensure the change over.
