I understand Telecom XT is 850/2100 Mhz. Phones often advertised as 900/2100 Mhz. How does this work? Is 900 Mhz close enough to 850 Mhz to alow function?

No 900 is 900mhz not 850mhz this is advised about 200+ times on geekzone

OK, thats as I thought. I would like an HTC HD 2 but seems only available 900/2100. Do you know of a 850/2100 version?

A 900/2100 phone will NOT work on XT. It will work brilliantly on Vodafone.

XT network is 850Mhz UMTS with a handful of 2100MHz UMTS sites in major cities.

Vodafone network is 2100MHz UMTS in major cities and 900MHz UMTS everywhere else in the country.\

HTC make many different phones. Some are 850/2100 and some are 900/2100. Some handsets are available in two different models for different parts of the world.

There currently isn't an 850/2100 3G version of the HTC HD2 available as of yet.

The other major carriers in the world with an 850 3G network are AT&T and Telstra NextG. If there is a version of the HD2 released for those networks, then you could import an unlocked version.

Looking unlikely though as T-Mobile have been announced as the exclusive carrier for the HD2 in the USA.

If you're keen on the phone, why not use it on Vodafone?

Yes, I can do that but sadly got sucked in by Telecom hype for XT and stuck for 24 months. I am wondering if the Sale of Goods Act applies to phone networks.

lso XT has dead spots right in Palmerston North city!!

I don't think this is something to invoke the Sale of Goods Act for... The lack of the specific handset model you want on the network you use is not their fault. If the manufacturer don't provide the hardware there's no way to blame the operator. I doubt there was ever a promise that any non-850MHz WCDMA handset would work on their network - a physical impossibility.

As for dead spots, all mobile networks have those...

Just because I point out the obvious that Telecom is not responsible for your choice of handset doesn't mean I work for them.

If people here on Geekzone got a dollar from everyone who came in and accused people of working for a company we would all be very rich. On the same week we have people saying "you work for [Vodafone|Telecom|TelstraClear|Sky] just because sometimes someone disagree.

Reality check time: not everyone agrees with you. Not everyone works for the company you don't like just because they point you are wrong.

By the way, this is a warning: respect the others here. Saying people are "bribed" or "worked" for a company, just like you did, got other people banned. In other words, respect.

OK, sorry. I do NOT however believe Telecom portrayed there product fairly on their TV adds. They will say they used "puffery" which is multinational corporation speak for BS.

But again, what is not correctly portrayed in the ads? Coverage? Bands? Handset availability?

I am asking these because if you are seriously thinking of taking Telecom up on a small claims court you better have good arguments, not only "I want that handset that doesn't work on their network".

Devil's advocate here...

You obviously didn't purchase if the handset from a Telecom store and this handset is incompatible with the XT network.

If a retailer you did buy it from told you it would work on XT then I would raise the issue with the store involved, you probably would have a good case to get a refund because they have given you incorrect information.

If you purchased the phone assuming it would work but didn't ask for advice first then it's unfortunate but it's a case of buyer beware..

The issue of coverage is the biggy. On a trip from Palmy to Tauranga it worked less often than it did. I got better coverage on Vodafone. It sure as chips wont work in a shipping container in the Hauraki Gulf.

Telecom also neglected to mention they were using an odd frequency in world wide terms.
