They can't just load the info on it, there's a lot of stuff on the SIM specific to the network.

Minimal waste in a sim. More of a waste is that some operators (cough vodafone cough) dont let you reuse a perfectly good but old one and make you spend 30 bucks on another if you wish to be able to give them more money in the future.

pick on something bigger than a SIM?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

That's great for me on here, but for the general populous who walk into a retail store and have to front up $30 getting on with vodafone and have to discard the old one (with all the excess packaging a new sim comes with) it is very wasteful.

2 degrees have done a great job with their sim packaging being pretty much as minimal as possible. My XT one came in a pretty heavy plastic clam shell which I thought was pretty wasteful.

Cigarette butts are more of a waste issue than SIM cards, start hitting up those tobacco manufacturers about that issue.

It would probably do more harm to the environment by having a machine at each store to be able to rewrite info on the SIM card.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.
