As many have pointed out, Clove have the Wildfire on pre-order for $500 delivered.

My question is would this be a better bet than the, now slightly aging, Nokia 5800 which can be had for $400 from various parallel impoters (and Nokia.co.uk direct).

I am a very casual user on 2Degrees and want an entry level smartphone that I can use for music and also would like to use the 'satnav' features. All the other stuff is window dressing for me so I am really easily pleased!

From what I can tell, the Nokia satnav offering is 'offline' so would be more applicable to me as I don't intend to switch to a plan and/or pay for data usage on prepay purely to use the navigation.

My only concern with the Nokia choice is that of OS as Android seems to be the current flavour that everyone is talking about and Symbian is changing too so will that make the 5800 obsolete pretty fast?

If anyone can help point me in either direction then I'd be grateful, I am knowledgable to a point but certainly not a true geek!

Apologies if this is in the wrong section but it's neither a Nokia/Symbian or Android specific

I'm a former 5800 owner and I can highly recommend it.

The free Satnav is truly awesome (and yes - you download the maps on your PC to your phone and they are stored loaclly including turn by turn navigation) and the sound (for music player purposes) is unrivalled, to be honest. Has a nice clear and bright screen, camera isn't that bad and with a 16gb micro SD card it becomes quite the beast.

Symbian isn't that bad and the 5800 has had a few recent firmware upgrades that have improved the overall usability and the music player has had a makeover too.

Personally, I think from your description above it'd be the ideal phone for you.

HTC wildfire for sure. What's the point to buy 3 years old technologyand  design in the face of nokia 5800?

HTC wildfire has better everything: screen, cpu, ram, os, touchscreen, design.

When clove starts shipping? could not find anything about it on their website. thanks.

Actually the screen resolution on the Wildfire is quite a lot worse than the 5800. 240x320 compared to 360x640. I expect media would look noticably better on the 5800.

The touch screen is capacitive compared to resistive for the 5800, perhaps thats what you meant.

And if satnav is important to you then Google Maps does not begin to approach the offline functionality of the Nokia satnav app.

Having said all that, I have recently stopped using the 5800 recently in favour of an Android 1.5 device (not the Widlfire obviously but it has a better screen). Some of the things I miss in addition to those above include voice dialling and voice announcement of caller ID, and full Microsoft Exchange integration (including company address book), but I think Android 2.1 might address that.

@n4 yeah the only disappointment is wildfire's screen resolution. otherwise it would be perfect mid-end toy.

I guess my pull towards the HTC (have to admit to wanting a Desire but my usage pattern doesn't really justify the extra moolah) is the quite seismic shift towards Android in the marketplace in general.

I'm not sure the choice is as clear as Betamax/VHS or HDDVD/Bluray but I don't want to buy a dinosaur by going for a Symbian and an old model at that.

Now that the 2Degrees data packs are out I suppose the amount of actual navigation I would likely do could be taken care of at relatively little cost if I plumped for the Wildfire.

Anyone got any feedback on the music capabilities of HTC, guessing Desire owners might have an insight?

It is meant (and priced) to be a low end phone.. off clove I think it's ~$480NZD..

Music will likely be OK as its based on Android and you'll be able to download different music apps if you wish. As long as you're not planning on actually playing music from the handset speakers (ie using headset/bluetooth etc) because if so the 5800 would do a much better job.

More a 'budget' smartphone, wouldn't describe such a feature packed phone as 'low end'

Here's an early review from my favourite UK site:

I think the main reason to go for the Wildfire is being an Android phone, and therefore having the Android app store (where purchased apps will be installable on future Android handsets). That isn't a small consideration by any means, as to my eyes Android looks to be the best mobile OS going forward.

If that is less important to you then I think the 5800 is the better choice with its higher resolution screen, and free offline mapping solution, which you mention is important.

I must admit that the lure of Android combined with the apps and newer technology in the HTCs has me swaying towards them.

If I could get hold of a cheap 5800 then I'd go for that as an interim but the cheapest I've found is still around $400 with ExpertInfotech so for another $100 I might as well go for the Wildfire.

Please keep the comments coming in as I may not even realise some of the pros and cons being a lifelong Nokia user

Totally agree with this. I have had a 5800 for about nine months and love it - don't use it a great deal for talking - mainly texts, music, email, GPS, web browsing. It's brilliant. Nokia are still supporting it and put out a firmware upgrade as recently as two weeks ago that made some great improvements to the music player plus kinetic scrolling, amongst other tweeks.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
