The SMS gateways I have found, that do 2-way messaging, don't work with the telecom network.

What would be stopping me making my own "gateway" using a cellphone plugged into a PC and talking to the cellphone using comport etc.

How many messages would the cellphone handle per second for example?

Are there any other was to do this? Maybe using a GSM modem perhaps?

There is nothing to stop you using a cell phone but you will need to know the AT commands to generate and send the text message. All manufacturers use different commands. You would probably only be able to send about 1 text every 2 seconds. Also be aware doing this would breach the conditions of $10 text which excludes 'machine generated' text.

As discussed elsewhere a few weeks ago and after some more research by myself there is no way you can use a CDMA handset for this and there are no CDMA modems in NZ that use the Wavecom chipset that impliment the AT SMS commands.

Using a GSM phone or modem to this this is very simple, all you need is a data cable and appropiate SMS gateway software. Send rate is around 1-2 SMS's per second however I would suggest you use something like Clickatell as a return path as the costs are substancially cheaper at around nz6c for an SMS to a NZ Vodafone mobile.

What??? Wow are you so wrong. Not being rude but your research is so wrong.

CDMA Wavecom Q2438F modules are available in NZ and have been for a few years - there are a few thousand out there.

There are also serial modems from - Anydata, Maxon and Multitech (Wavecom module)
Modules from - Wavecom, Sierra Wireless, Motorola, AnyData and Kyocera

All the above are approved by Telecom for connection to 027 and all of them can send SMS generated from AT commands. I know because I have done it.

I had thought of sending via clickatell and receiving via phone.

Just want to make sure that phone can handle potential large amounts of incoming message per minute.

Failing that, does anyone know of a decent cheap 2-way gateway in NZ?

If you are serious about volume then a two-way SMS number with Clickatell should be a good try. The service receives the reply and have it POSTed to a URL where your scripts will do the job. Of course you will have some good knowledge of php or asp scripting to handle this, and a good server.

I use Clickatell for our Geekzone SMS service (link is an affiliate, thanks)... I have a simple script that allows people to send SMS to a friend with the URL for a story. Less than 10 lines on asp, and very effective. And cheaper than Vodafone or Telecom could offer me.

So cheap that I actually give the SMS for free, two a day...

I have looked at ClickaTell and they are impressive, but they don't work with Telecom network do they?

I would need to be able to send/receive to Telecom mobiles.

Yes, they do work with Telecom. May not receive from Telecom (haven't tested this), but certainly they send SMS to both networks in New Zealand (tested on my Apache now, just to be sure).
