Hi. Does it make any difference to battery life if EVDO is 'connected' (i.e. modem connected to mobile@jamamobile) but not transmitting data, versus not connected at all but still waiting for calls?

I would have thought not, because the phone radio is on and in standby in both cases? Or is there some sort of EVDO heartbeat that uses up battery life with radio transmision?

There is no network heartbeat but jamamobile is an open internet connection so like any open internet connection there will be 'chatter'. So, the answer is yes staying connected will impact on your battery.
