Hi all,

i have previoulsy used Nokia PC Suite with all my Nokia handsets in the past, however i have just got a new handset (2730 classic) and have come accross the new Nokia Ovi Suite, what is the difference?  Does this new suite do all the old one did, should i have both?

When i connect my phone to the new Ovi suite, is it just a connection between my handset and the PC like the old PC Suite or does it automatically use my handset and my mobile service provider to connect to the internet using mobile internet or is it a static connection between the PC and the handset like the old PC Suite?

When downloading maps it says your phone needs to be connected, again, am i using my normal ISP internet connection to download these maps then the suite to transfer them to my handset, or does the suite instigate a connection to the internet through my handset bypassing my ISP set up internet connection.

also what are all the internet related applications in the web menu on the phone?

Jason.

ovi suit is just the new version of pc suit
nokia encourage people to get ovi suit
however there is really no big diff between the two, apart from the UI

MOBILE: Huawei P30
OTHER: Thinkpad E14 + Asus Vivobook + Intel NUC5i3 + A family of Raspberry Pi x 9 + Amazon Echo

Ovi Suire is a more refined version of what PC Suite started out with.

More things are integrated into Ovi Suite than there was with PC Suite (Maps, Software updater etc previously launched as separate applications.

When getting map data using the Maps function you will be using your home internet connection UNLESS you've selected Connect to Web on Ovi Suite which will then use your phones internet connection.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Can anyone use the ovi store? I really want the updated version of sports tracker but nothing works in ovi. I can't log in on my n95, even using the phone browser, and when I log in on my computer I can't download anything, it asks to text me a link. Which has never worked, I suspect it may have something to do with the fact my number is 027 when on vodafone.

Anyway for pcsuite vs ovisuite, I can't stand ovi, so just PC Suite, seems easier to negotiate the file structure of the phone from it.

How do I get the updated sportstracker!!

I don't know why you can't log on with your phone nor receive the link mudguard but you can download most free apps (not paid ones) this way using a PC only -

Go to the app in the store and open the display of the app up by clicking on the app name and then select the Send to Friend option that will appear.

Then in your browser's address bar change the last part of the page URL from /send-to-friend to /download and open it. You will then get to save the app file that will have a .dm extension added to it so extension will be .sis.dm or .sisx.dm.

Once you have the file saved open it in Notepad, or similar text editor and delete the first 4 lines (normally 4) so you are just left with the binary then save that without the .dm extension. You should then have a .sis or .sisx file to install in the normal way.

I have double checked just now and this worked for getting Sportstracker except I did not bother trying installing it.

Does the .sis or.sisx extension only apply to sports tracker, as out of curiosity i thought i would test this theory out to see if i could download to PC as oppposed to the conventional way of sending a text message link to my phone to download it using my handset (not that i have ever tried so i would not know if this conventional method works for me or if i too would have a similar problem to mudguard), and my download which did work by the way is a .jad file, admittedly it is not the same app, but whatever.  I have not installed the app either, so who know if it would work...

I would assume that one would maybe be able to download .jad files the same way off the Ovi Store but I haven't tried. I suspect the unknown tricky bit is what they come down with insofar as any extra extension is concerned and what header if any one may have to try to edit out of the file itself.

That said as far as I know the whole method as I described it only works for .sis/.sisx files and they are the only ones I have downloaded using it.

The few times I have tried I have never had a problem downloading them over the phone either using the text link the Store sends. Seems a bit obvious but I have since wondered if mudguard has not ommited the "0" in his 027 number in the international form +64 27 1234567?

Small note. Tried this method to install sportstracker, was fine until I actually installed on my phone, said unsigned error or something like that. Tried the text to my phone again, a week later, still nothing.

I have tried too and as you say it doesn't install (with me on an E52). I tried another app to just check if the method was still valid and that one worked fine so I suspect Sports Tracker is one of the ones, like the paid apps, for which the method doesn't work.

Back to downloading it to the phone - you mentioned maybe the problem was to do with your 027 number. Long shot as pretty obvious but I assume that your number registered in the Ovi Store is +6427xxxxxx and not +64027xxxxxx?

In case all else fails and you consider it an acceptable substitute Endomondo Sports Tracker works fine with the /download substitution off the store and even comes straight down as the .sis file so no Notepad editing required.

It is to do to with the ported number, just as Vodafone settings fail to send to ported numbers via their wireless portal.

So, for example, would it be that mudguard could just log into the Ovi Store click the "Send to mobile" button, take up the option to change the mobile number the texted download link is to go to, and enter a willing friend's/family member Vodafone (or Telecom mobile) number. Then revert to his own phone to navigate to the link and download the app??

When I did the upgrade to Ovi it stuffed up my outlook appointments something chronic. Having had two reminders of a meeting at 2am I promptly nuked Ovi and will revisit that another day!

Another note. Did the text message link to my missus' phone. Copied it, went to the ovi site on my phone, logged in. But can't use ovi in opera. No drama.
Used link in standard N95 browser, opened link, clicked download, asked me to log in, no worries, taken back to download link once logged in, click download, asks me to log in. Repeat ad nauseum.
I can log in opera, the stock browser, PC, but it won't let me download this app.
I just want the updated sportstracker.
