Hi

A few people I know have newish nokias with the maps function. Basically wanting to know how it works since there is no GPS seems to be close to accurate, and secondly does it cost anything, e.g. does it use 3G data to calculate location therefore will charge you for the data being used.

So how does it work?
Does your carrier charge you anything for using it?

You download the maps first from the ovi maps site - so you have all the map info stored in your phone. All of NZ is one download. If you are traveling outside NZ obviously you should plan ahead. From memory the NZ maps info was 50mb? So doesnt take much space on a mem card.

Next - make sure you turn off the 3g data part of the phone - I think there is an option under maps to tell it not to use the 3G data.

The phone uses triangulation from the cellphone towers as well as (I think some GPS info from satellite location - maybe wrong about that). Anyway - The ovi maps will work - but it will take several minutes to work out initially where you are but then its quite usable as a mobile GPS - Tried it on a Nokia c6 - it had voice guidance - so just like a Tom tom etc.

If you want it to start up and find its location quicker you can let it use the 3G network. I gather it sends very tiny amounts of data initially (only at start up) to try and confirm the cell tower info etc. My understanding is its just a few bytes and only at start up. Anyway - this is supposed to make it quite a bit quicker to get going. I had to admit that with our c6 I did think initially it was broken (with the data turned off) as it really did take quite a few minutes to find itself - but was fine after that - depends how impatient you are...

So is the triangulation bit free?
But if you want the 3G assisted to speed it up it will cost a few cents worth of data or will Vodafone/telstraclear sting you for $1 and allow you to use up o 10MB?
