Hey, i know it can be done in a few situations (not sure of the process however), but I am wondering if it is possible to import cdma phones from overseas and get them connected to the telecom network. I am wondering about all the different situations such as buying a phone from the net which is not yet assigned to a network or buying a phone which is set up for a specific network in a different country and re-programming it.

Anyone know about any methods? any comments anyone? This could work out to be a lot cheaper than buying phones in NZ or could be a good money making venture for someone, some of the overseas cdma phones are a bargain compared to what telecom is charging.

Hi,

Trying to get an imported CDMA handset connected to telecoms network is next to impossible. If the ESN number of the handset is not loaded into the system, or allocated to another network, it comes up as invalid. And will not be connected. CDMA or IS95 is a standard, but with CDMA networks carries often customizes parts of the network to suite their needs. For example telecoms Handshaking to the network when connecting for packet data is unique. And a handset from sprint or another carrier might be different in turn you will have problems doing data. Telecom have yet to lunch MMS, but verizon do etc. The list goes on. So at the moment not really.

copying serial number and contents of system from NZ mobile to imported handset
(you have to know both handset's programing code)

Only if you're doing yourself... apparently Telecom New Zealand is reluctant to connect imported mobile phones.
