Marc, TIM may be right - or not. First you have to check that your nmumber and connection string is correct.

To test you can use *99# on your Pocket PC. This number connects to the default APN as configured in your mobile phone. Now, most operators configure the phone correctly before sending them out to the market. Let's hope so. If the default APN connects to WAP them you'll have to either use another configured APN or configure one yourself and then use it. In this case you'll use *99***x# where x corresponds to the CID created.

You might also want to add the +CGDCONT=1,,"" init string on your Pocket PC, as per our guides. APN name is the one used by TIM. They have to give you this name.

If you have problems configuring the phone, yes, TIM has to help you.

The parameters TIM gave you make sense. If you've used them as you typed here then this is the problem.

The init string should be entered like this: +CGDCONT1,,"tim.br" or +CGDCONT1,,"tim.br",0.0.0.0

The dial in number should be *99***1#

Note the AT is not entered in the init string on your Pocket PC! Also you'll use " " instead of ( ).

Make sure the "tim.br" is the correct name.

Wow, this is great Marc. Now we know what to do if another TIM user finds the same problem... Thanks!

Some APN connect you to the WAP gateway and others to an internet gateway.

You have to check with TIM if your current configuration allows access to POP3 servers. Also you'll need TIM's own SMTP server address, because most ISP block SMTP access from outside network to avoid people using them as SPAM relays.

No problem... When you connect to the internet over GPRS you have a gateway. This is server that will transfer your requests to the network (sort of).

Some operators have a gateway that connect only to their WAP gateway servers. Other gateways are used to connect to the internet. Reasons for this include load balancing, etc.

WAP gateways will only connect to certain servers and most of them will not allow a connection to a POP3 server, which is what you need to collect your e-mail. So, for this to work you have to be sure you have the right gateway. The APN is the name for this gateway.

For the SMTP the problem is different. Most ISP will block access to their SMTP servers unless coming from inside its own network or a trusted server. This is to avoid people using these servers to send spam e-mails. Most mobile operators provide a SMTP server so their users can send e-mails when connected to their GPRS network.

I'm not sure if it is good or bad news for me.
Using the S-55 and an Ipaq 2210, with operator CLARO didn't get results for me. Tried a lot of different strings, all based on the one TIM gave you, except for the 0.0.0.0 DNS afterwards. Gotta try it tomorrow.
No results programming the phone's profiles either. And the oddest of all, just for the sake of testing, I installed the GPRS modem on my desktop computer, and tried to connect to it via Bluetooth. The phone connects, authenticates, and as it is starting to transfer data, it *turns off*, which is very odd. I have used BT to sync the phone, and GPRS with WAP access from the phone itself, so I know things are working (albeit apart).

If someone has a clue, will be grateful!

Rafael

Rafael, the string + cgdcont=1,"IP',"tim.br","0.0.0.0" works for TIM only, because the APN is only accessible from inside their own network. In your case "tim.br" should be replaced with the appropriate name supplied from your operator.

About the phone turning itself off - perhaps you should check a firmware update? It really seems strange.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I substituted the "tim.br" part of the string to "claro.com.br" which is Claro's APN. As for firmware, I have the latest official version, which is 16. There are some unnoficial updates floating around, but I heard they lead to potential other problems, especially with WAP.
I'm trying to find someone with the S-55 and BT to try and connect it to their desktops...
if someone volunteers... :)
