Hi all,

I wanted to get some feedback on people's impression of the size of the HTC Hermes vs larger devices such as the Universal?

The reason I ask is that I am trying to select a device for Sales Reps, and so if the screen is too small it is difficult for them, especially the ones with less than perfect vision.

So I have drawn up the dimensions of the JasJar (5.2" x 3.1", with a 3.6" screen) and compared it to the Hermes (4.4" x 2.2", with a 2.8" screen) and it looks that the Hermes is much smaller - too small for my objectives.

However - when I look at photos such as on Unwired ( http://www.theunwired.net/./?itemid=3100 ), the size difference does not look as dramatic!  Perhaps the Hermes is the right device after all!!

My 2nd question is asking for advicve regarding other devices: my criteria are a decent sized screen, 3G phone, and WindowsMobile5.0
What devices would you add to your shortlist for these criteria?

I have been trialing the imate JasJar (aka Universal) with some Sales Reps but they feel the swivel screen is likely to be broken often.

Cheers,
James.

Welcome to Geekzone. The screen on the HTC Hermes is smaller than the one on the Jasjar, which is very nice and readable, but overall it's a bulkier device. The HTC Hermes is approximately the same size as the i-mate JAMmin you can see in Australia.

What sort of info do the sales reps need to see? For example if it mainly alerts re time/appointments then some judicious tailoring of the home screen (.xml code) might solve the issue while still retaining a small form-factor device. Selective reduction of the font-size of unimportant info. with increased font-size for important stuff. Even simple things like changing the background (often rather over-egged by default) can help legibility.

I personaly havnt seen reports of broken swivels on the Jasjar.
If the reps will be viewing documents and spreadsheets then the bigger screen would of course be preferable.

The carrying of the device is an issue however, can fit into a pocket but is bulky. I have one of those aluminium cases with belt clip and it has saved it a few times from little falls etc. Or would most people use a soft case and have it in the briefcase or similiar??

jturnbull: Hi again!
Well I took your advice Mauricio, and am trialling an i-mate JAMin.  So far it is going very well, and my concerns about the screen size seems unfounded. It seems the JAMin's screen is only 20-25% smaller. It is as you also said, a much more viable mobile phone, and sound quality is good!
I have a small picture comparing the iPAQ 5450, i-mate JasJar and i-mate JAMin - is it possible to attach files in these forums?

Thanks for your advice!Laughing

Do you have any idea when the JasJAM (aka HTC Hermes) is likely to arrive in Aust or NZ?  Or do you think they would instead brand it as the HTC TyTN??  My supplier is unable to advise me so far, but I am hopeful of it being in the next month or two, since it is appearing in a couple of other countries now..

HTC will most likely concentrate marketing efforts in Europe, leaving Australasia and Middle Eastern countries to i-mate. I don't have an idea on when the JasJAM will arrive here, but it should be soon. The i-mate smartflip is the next one in the queue for New Zealand, but that's a Windows Mobile Smartphone.
