Hi,

My job is taking me out to Australia in a couple of weeks from the UK.  I'll be based in Sydney until approx Christmas time and will be looking for a SIM only deal to put into my UK phone.  I'm mostly interested in the deal with the cheapest GPRS because I won't be phoning many people seeing as I don't know anyone there!

I've tried looking on all the provider's websites but most of them don't seem too clear on GPRS costs on Prepaid.  I assume I'll have to go onto prepaid, I doubt they'll want me on a contract having no credit history Down Under.

Any suggestions who's the cheapest/best?  I've kind of got used to the unlimited GPRS data here with T-Mobile so will be looking for about 20/30MB per month....

Cheers for your help.

P.S. I'm aware this is a NZ site but couldn't see an equivalent Oz site!

You are out of luck, In NZ Prepay users can use GPRS for $10 a megabyte on Vodafone (only) but all Australians providers block access. A mate had one which did indeed work but it was a "issue" they are obviously aware of the bugs. also you CANNOT GET THE GENERIC SETTINGS EITHER, they are pretty closed on it, I assume there is some bugs to be exploited which why they are so quiet on the subject.

See your current provider for "roaming" also NZ prepay sims can data roam in Australia, so this might be the fix.

Hi Nuttyphilt,

I have the same question as you, but regarding New Zealand, as I'm going there for holiday for 6 weeks and want prepaid GPRS!

Be warned, the following information may be out of date as on the 1st of August Vodafone changed their plans, so you will have to verify it with them.  http://www.vodafone.com.au  or For more information on Data Bundles, call us on 1800 635 627

Your only option without a contract would be to get Vodafone on account.  Something like their talk n text $30 voice plan which you can then "bolt-on" a $30 for 100MB GPRS plan, or a $50 for 300MB GPRS plan (or $99 for 1GB).

I myself am on the $30 voice with the $30 data bundle, however their terms changed on the 1st of August.

If they don't let you get it, then maybe they will allow data bundles with the $79 single user business account.  Noone else besides vodafone are doing no contracts.  On account just means you use your credit card and they bill you straight away for the first month.

If you want further information the forums to hit are http://www.aussie3g.com/ and http://www.whirlpool.net.au

PS If anyone in NZ can tell me of a similar setup where I can get 100MB a month of GPRS cheaply then please let me know.

i used to use my Vodafone Aust gprs when it was free (they had this special promotion thing) but now it charges. i think its still the best provider for gprs. I ussually topup with the $49 cap and get $230 worth of credits.
I also tried gprs on my telstra but it seems to chew up my credit quicker lol
