This cannot be done as '3' are unwilling to unlock handsets from their network.

Vodafone UK and others will unlock them for free. I read a story of somebody paying 200 pounds to '3' to get it unlocked only to have them tell him it couldnt be done and refuse to give the money back.

NOBODY will unlock it for free. Especially not the operators.
There are people dealing with unlocking, I knew one here on the forums, probably others can tell his nickname.
Try with him, he may unlock it for you, but not for free.

Nobody is very inclusive and as for the operators, have you seen VFAU's website?

From what i have read, all the UK operators are happy to unlock the phones, maybe for a small fee. All except '3'. It only applies to the new S40 3rd edition Nokias

Phones are locked because operators sell them at reduced price and tied to a contract. Operators are happy to unlock for a fee, after the contract is finished, or for an even higher fee if the contract is not up yet.

Some operator will plainly refuse to unlock a phone.

An operator can not issue an unlock code for a phone sold by another operator.

Some people unlock phones, but not for free, as it involves cost with software, work, etc.

Phones are blocked when reported lost or stolen. In this case operators will most likely not unblock a phone.
