Left a friend's mobile phone (Philips Xenium GSM) to quote for a repair. The problem: not charging. I told them I wasn't sure if it was the charger or the battery.

Anyway, got a quote of NZ$ 250 to have

  • battery replaced
  • charger replaced
  • mobile phone fixed

Of course I declined the quote, because for this amount my friend can buy a new Nokia GSM.

Got back to the office and was playing with the phone, and noticed a rattle on the battery. Since it's a vibrate model I gave it a good shake. To my surprise when I put the battery back in the phone came back alive! I then plugged the charger and it's now charging.

Contacted them over the phone and was told that it didn't work when they tested.

So, this company wanted to charge me for more things than needed. What a surprise, uh?

Did anyone see the Fair go article relating to mobile phone repairs?
I missed it but I heard about it. Anyone know where I can get the low down on what it was all about?

Yes was very interesting basically an arguement on where Fair wear and Tear stops and Impact damage by customer begins in warranty claims . Also Dealers / Sales not warning customers on the fragile nature of the new big LCDs and Internal Suraface mount devices ! Sorry didnt have a VHS tape handy in time !!

Sweet as, they didnt mention anything about manufacturer culpability if they make overly fragile devices?
Would have been interesting to see, its astounding how many phones fail due to whatever reason

I unfortunately missed a few seconds of the item as the Phone rang right at the worst time .
there may have been other comments that I missed , perhaps others can help !

I found the LCD on my old 5110 was very prone to going blank in cold temperatures .
It would also go blank if you pressed on the phone keyboard too hard !!
