I have been testing and using my EVDO devices in more and more rural situations in the South Island and i am finding with enhanced antennas etc i am getting EVDO well out side of the the recommended coverage areas.

In Ashburton District i can get EVDO signal and connection with resonable speed on my Apache at least 20km (crow flies) from the Ashburton Site. (this is dependent on direction to the site as this site is poor perfroming to the nor west)

With a minimax it's about the same and with a decent antenna on router i can get excellent speed in many locations at a similar distance to this site.

I am also finding Coverage from Timaru extends past Temuka (15 km from Timaru) but unless you set your device to EVDO only the local 1xRTT site takes over.

I have found the same in CHCH and Selwyn districts.

All in all EVDO could be if rolled out in more smaller centres a real rural broadband option, i am extremely impressed with the coverage in the South, with the right settings on your device/modem and a good antenna EVDO works really well.

With Rev a coming out this year and more sites being upgraded, Telecom has a significant advantage in offering broadband nationwide!

Good feedback. Coverage indications are only ever based on conservative 'hand held' device estimates and not devices using an external antenna so I am not really surprised by what you are seeing.

Yeah i am really impressed!

From what one of my contacts was saying, EVDO when setup properly can offer similar data coverage as 1xrtt and in some cases better. I am seeing this to be the case.

I am just waiting to see more fixed or router/modem based EVDO products brought to market. I have clients iching to take hold of this stuff and dare i say i, utilize the capabilities of EVDO and 1xrtt for Skype or VoIP calling and remote TS sessions etc in cars & other vehicles.

Customizable for individual clients etc.

Any ideas on possibly roll out foot print of Rev A, some commentators are saying current rev 0 sites, others are saying main centres?

I do know the RevA footprint but I don't think I would be able to say on Geekzone what the footprint will be. Put it this way Rev0 will be it for you for now.

Coverage does vary on 1xRTT because of cellsite breathing. EVDO does not breathe.

thanks for the unoffical comments here,

To be expected. EVDO has been be rolled out on more sites i can see down in South island since start of year which is good. Investment most likely 027 foot print growth berfore 025 goes!!

The breathing certainly explains why i can get EVDO coverage during peak times and also why i get EVDO inside 1xRTT cell areas, i do get times in CHCH city where i can only get 1xRTT and then EVDO comes back after a wee while, this is a little strange. Any ideas?

Ec/Io

The ratio of signal energy measured within a single chip duration of the pilot signal against the power spectrum of interference and noise.

In other words your signal strength might look fine but the Ec/Io might be too low (network noise and interference) to allow a reliable EVDO connection.

I think I have this right.

That explains it, only happens in the City, when i am out rural i find it works the other way. Less usrs i guess.

Thx

"Coverage does vary on 1xRTT because of cellsite breathing. EVDO does not breathe."

Not strictly true, as CDMA is still used for the EVDO Rev0 uplink (i.e. the link from the moble back to the base station), so a user on the edge of coverage can still have issues caused by cell breathing. Fortunately the EVDO network is pretty lightly loaded so cell breathing effects are minimal.

mjsit&t, its great to hear you are "pushing the envelope". Another benefit of external antenna that I like to harp on about is improved data speeds. The EVDO Rev 0 scheduler in the base station prefers mobiles in good coverage, so boasting your coverage with an upgraded antenna also boost your data speeds.
