I'm a wireless data engineer, so it's my job to find out how to do this stuff, also I have had a number of customer queries regarding how to do some of the below on these CDMA phones...
I have talked to Telecom's wireless data helpdesk a number of times, yes... I know I won't get anywhere with them...
I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the Nokia 6585 intiate a 1x data call on the phone itself?
I better clarify I'm not connecting the phone to a computer via IR or data cable I know that can be done.....
Here what I'm trying to acheive, I have loaded two JAVA apps, one is an HTML Web browser (Webviewer by Reqwireless), and the other is an Email application... (Emailviewer by Reqwireless)
I DONT want to use the WAP gateway which is charged at .5c per kb..
I DONT want to use Minibrowser...
I WANT the phone to intiate a 1x data call when I attempt to go to a web page via the webbrowser... or when i check pop3 email via the email application...
Here are my results thus far....
When I installed both apps and attempted to use the web browser, I type a URL in... http://www.google.com, the phone responded by asking "Allow Network Access"?
I choose yes, then it displayed "Calling #777" (i thought yay it works) however then the phone displays the "Sent >>>>>>>" "Received <<<<<<<" screen which indicates that a data call is in session and shows data sent and received. But I couldn't get back to the Webbrowser screen so I could use it and see the webpage, all i could do by pressing the buttons was hangup the data call, I could see data is being sent and received...
Same results with the email viewer application... it would establish a 1x data call by saying calling #777 then the data sent/received screen shows...cant get back to the email app..
So I close the apps and try again, this time...
Webviewer: I type in a URL, the phone says "Allow Network Access?" I choose yes, It then displays a Red status bar which said "Contacting Server"...... All of a sudden my web page starts loading... and works fine... I load other webpages and it works... it's loading quite fast so I assume it's using the mobile jetstream connection... Same results with Emailviewer it works fine too, same red status bar when it's collecting pop3 email messages...
So I contact Telecom data helpdesk 12 hrs later and ask what my data useage is (i knew my billing cycle was up so my useage before all this testing was 0) he says you haven't used any data! I was surprised, however not for long... then I asked him when was my last WAP call? he said about 12hrs ago, and they are all out of menu charges... this was the time when I was testing the above! damn...
more obsvervations...
If you enter *#2769737# on the phone you can change the minibrowser settings... You will see a Server 1, Server 2 , Server 3 menu options, Server 1 has an address of 166.179.037.129:00080, no addresses in the other menus...
I presume this is the telecom WAP gateway and this is what the phone has been using to intiate the data calls above...
What I dont understand is during my first data session the phone dialled #777 and it DID make a proper data call, it's just that I couldn't use the web application cause of the sent/rec data status screen comes up in the way.
But the second use of the application it didnt show that it was "calling #777"... it just connected (via wap?)
The phone has no menus to input different data profile accounts, CSD accounts (ala GSM phones where you enter GPRS APN's, which can use your data account)..
Interesting, but I'm not ready to giveup yet...whats keeping me going is.... that it did initiate the 1x data call in the beginning..
Also how did it connect sucessfully without inputting the jamamobile user name and password? Is this already defined in the phone? Is there another *#CODE# where it will let me setup the data account and define a default account? instead of WAP?
any insight appreciated...
cheers,
Jai
