My dad's friend just got a gift from Japan, the sanyo v801sa. It's a 3G phone and he was wondering if it's possible to get it working in New Zealand. Can it be unlocked to work on GSM? Is it possible to use with sim1 or sim2? it keeps asking for the usim card (u=universal) and they call it a vodafone vgs phone (vodafone global standard). Will it really be 18 months until 3G works in NZ? There must be a way to unlock it for sim1/2 cards...

If the phone is WCDMA only, then no luck. Some models are GSM and WCDMA, but not all...

The Sanyo V801sa is dual mode, so It *should* work with a standard NZ sim, ( I am assuming that the USIM slot is backward compatable with Standard SIM Cards),

it is a triband 9/18/1900, so NZ is no probs, some of the software might keep trying to access customised services, ( I am not sure if japanese Sha-maill, will dovetail into the MMS system in NZ), but it is all vodafone Kit, so The chances are better than everage, - certainly better that me trying to connect a Japanese CDMA2000 phone to the T/com network a few years ago, it would roam in NZ fine, but I had to pay the bill in japan, T/Com simply would not connect it as a local phone :(,

Hi there, I also was sent a Sanyo 3G V801SA so it would be good to know if its possible to use them here in new zealand, my friend also sent me the charger which doesn't seem to go into new zealand sockets, instead of it being slanted at the end its straight so it won't go into the socket..any suggestions people??

I think that i need a conversion plug, but not too sure how much one will cost, my friend doesn't know much about them eiter, so i have this really flash phone and have no idea how to use and if i can use it, lol, im not even sure if its prepay or if it can be. i think i will give vodfone a call but they probably don't know much about them either since they have just come out in japan on december 1st 2003.

A conversion plug costs around $9 on Dick Smith. They have models to convert from the NZ to American, Japanese, European formats and vice-versa. Most mobile chargers are 110-220V automatic anyway.

There are a lot of people all over the world that are trying to get this phone unlocked so it can be used on overseas networks but so far no body has had any luck. The phone is locked to the Vodafone Japan network and getting it unlocked will be major headache. Probably the best chance of getting it unlocked will be using 'bitpim' software which reads the details of the software that is programme into the phone. You would then have to take that data to someone who is clued up on the Vodafone network in NZ (ie. a Vodafone technician) but they are not likely to give away any onfo on how to crack their network.
Unfortunately as the phone is not connected to a Japanese network at the moment it will be very hard if not impossible to get all of the information off the phone's software that you would need to change it to the NZ network.

The phone companies in Japan go to a lot of trouble to ensure that their phones will only work in Japan, so don't get your hopes up of finding a solution for this problem.
