Is it possible to send txts by gprs? the average txt is only 400b, gprs usage is 1kb=1c, so 1 txt wouldn't even cost 1c, and they wanna charge us 20c...
so is it possible? what about a program that can do it?
there must be a way, isnt there?
or would it go through the same txt server and charge 20c anyway?

Just shows you how much were getting ripped off by all the cellphone companies (and this is one thing which isn't a result of being in NZ, 10 pence I think is the average txt cost int he UK (30 cents)).

Also, most txt's aren't 'average', most people only send a word or two at a time.

People don't really realise this but... Using the standard SMS as a transport and using 1KB = 1024 bytes we have 1024 bytes / 160 bytes SMS (maximum) = 6.4. It means that you need 6.4 SMS to make 1KB of information. This means that 1KB of data over SMS costs 6.4 x NZ$0.20 = 1.28. If you multiple this by 1024 you'll have the MB cost: NZ$1310.72

Yep, 1MB of data over SMS would cost NZ$1310.72, which makes SMS an expensive chat thing...

Sending Instant Messages over GPRS is cheaper, since you can get flat fee GPRS in the US for US$19.95. In New Zealand you can get GPRS at NZ$15 for 5MB, which is a lot of data for instant message. Of course, in this situtation people then would start using the GPRS for e-mail and then costs would go up.

Using ICQ or a similar program can offer free text delivery world wide - although it isnt always reliable. There is also more than just the actual message data being transmitted/received.

I should have said - you would also need a Pocket PC type phone, or a PDA transmitting through a GPRS capable mobile phone.

Or a Symbian (UIQ or Series 60) smartphone running Agile Messenger - it logs into MSN, ICQ and AIM.

I use it on my Sony Ericsson P800. Very good software, and free.

Nope. The software runs on Windows Mobile Smartphones or Symbian Smartphones only.

There is ICQ/MSN software that works on the T610/T630
http://cmessenger.cleverlance.com/en/index.jsp

It requires you download a small Java applet and that you give a remote site your ICQ/MSN username/password. The reason for this is the application is very small (just uses HTTP) and tells the remote server to do the actual logging in (Java on the T610/T630 doesn't support sockets, damnit)

I've used it and it works really well.

Tim

PS: If people are interested in getting their T610/T630/Z600/other SE phones debranded from the Vodafone live stuff, contact me. It'll void your warranty though, but I can provide support for you.

Dudes

Hi, any way I can be of assistance ;-)

Have you seen the www.jablab.com, we have details on the phones and software for real data based IM.
Phone-2-PC, phone-to-phone,PC to Phone, Push-to-talk if you hate keypads ,we will add the http client listed in this forum, thank you for the heads up.

You might want to know the costs depend on the phone capabilities, GSM and CSD can cost up to 30c a Kb, GPRS is 6c or less per 10Kb.

Hey terryv, are you guys the ones that were on the newspapers a few weeks ago (see Computerworld NZ), about a New Zealand company developing a local Jabber interoperability platform, or something like this?

Do you have some more stuff so we can post about it on an article? You might want to click the e-mail button to contact me...

Dear Dudes

Regarding the Jabber press release on the new software for Handsets connecting to Jabber, asked a few questions and yes these are IMPS clients (Instant Messaging and Presence Server) J2ME, Symbian, Palm, MS Smartphone and RIM. They combine this with MMS, SMS and PXT, basically you can select a variety of messaging options to you contacts in your address book.

When I have more information I will send it through
