Important service announcement: TiVo Service ending on 31 October 2017

We are sad to report that we have reached the end of our TiVo license and the TiVo Service is coming to an end in New Zealand on 31 October 2017.

The TiVo Service is what delivers electronic programming guide data to your TiVo device each day, so without it, there will be no electronic programming guide and TiVo recording features such as Season Pass and WishList will stop working. For more information on what will and will not work after 31 October see “What does this mean for you and your TiVo after 31 October?”. Your TiVo device will have extremely limited functionality and we discourage customers from using it after 31 October.

We are glad that when the time comes, you will have been able to enjoy your TiVo device for at least 5 years. We are sure you will find plenty of home entertainment alternatives out there, and are contacting you now to make sure you have plenty of time to upgrade your technology by 31 October 2017 and to help make sure your transition is as smooth as possible.

Please think of the environment and dispose of your TiVo device at your local e-cycling facility.

For further information on the end of the TiVo Service, please visit www.mytivo.co.nz

We wish you all the best and thank you for your support over the years.

Just had this come through to me via e-mail... Have had this unit since launch day in 2009, so is going to be weird switching to something else. Anyone got suggestions for an alternative? I've got zero clue on what is out there in the market since I've had this for so long.

Maybe something like this? http://www.panasonic.com/nz/consumer/tvs-home-theatre-and-audio/blu-ray-dvd/blu-ray-recorders/dmr-bwt760.html

Only records freeview but can play Netflix through it

Well that seals it then, I am going to have to upgrade my TV card to a 4 channel.

A bit gutted really as I love the Tivo, it does everything I want and is easy enough for someone non-techy to use.

It is a real shame it didn't fly.

I wonder if they would support or tolerate a community edition hack? Much like the TiVo 1.

Can anyone advise whether MagicTV is a suitable replacement for my much loved TiVo? On paper, the specs and features seem to match the TiVo....

Better put mine on TM fast before this gets out!

But seriously the writing has been on the wall for some time. It's been a good run for a decent electronic box. Shame there's not a hack to get the regular EPG. A lot of content is now on-line so have been wondering if a recorder is even necessary now, but we do use the time shift regularly so probably look at a Panasonic box. Too many I know have had issues with Magic and Dish options.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

That is disappointing. We have two Tivo boxes networked and it has been a great entertainment system.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to re-use the Tivo hardware with some alternative software?  With a Broadcom CPU, twin tuners, HDD and ethernet there must be something that can be done?  Unless Tivo have somehow locked down the system?

I guess we're going to have to start replacing ours in the very near future, rather than waiting until later. It's going to take a while to replace the four TiVo boxes here!

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Only the mysky has the required epg data feed which allows all the great features.

This is terrible news.

Well, Im in mourning. 2 Tivos here and I have really enjoyed them. I cant imagine going back to the old days of having to manually programme in a recording.

My wife loves it, but a modern FV recorder is the same, especially with FV Plus is a great step ahead. I hate the Tivo Ui colours. Garrish

Given the lack of an external epg feed, i don't see that it can be as good.

The over the air epg feed seems inadequate to provide the tivo / mysky type functionality.
