For those who have contemplating buying a TiVo or who are keen on another - my brother-in-law was in Noel Leeming and saw they were down to $199 again.

Having bought one a couple of weeks ago for $250 I'm a bit miffed, but I knew it would happen at some point...

Ha, yeah I saw that yesterday and hoped you hadn't mate!

At that price, and now with a full EPG it's got to be the deal of the moment. You can pay more than that for a single tuner set top box with no hard drive and a dodgy record to USB option etc.

I checked with Noel Leemings a few days ago. The biggest problem is that the unit is too high for my cabinet right now - the model is 80mm as opposed to (say) Magic TV which is only 62mm. However, when I have my Plasma hung against the wall, it will fit on the top. Maybe I should grab it at that price and sort it out later.

You know the reason the price ahs dropped is because a new model is coming out soon, presumably with more hard drive space etc. Will thse PVRs one day have triple tuners or even more?

Also, I think you can only get full EPG and series link for recording if you are subscribed to Telecom broadband. Otherwise it is manual program recording just like the old style video recorders. Or have I got that wrong?

Yes you are wrong. They apply for everyone, doesn't matter who your ISP is. The whole telecom thing being reuiqred to b your ISP to use a tivo, was misinformtion that probably prevented them being taken up.

Sure newer version may come out, but will they also be $199? You can also buy the home networking package to download to your PC if you need more diskpsace, but even with a TB of diskspace, that will also never be enough.The orginal price for the tivo was over $800, so it is like 75% off

TIVO has / had the CASPA video download ability and the data for this feature was un-metered on Telecom. That's where that misconception came from. TIVO will work with any broadband provider and will realistically use very little data to retrieve the EPG data only.

You got it wrong. It works (as it always did) with any ISP.

CASPA (the movie download service) is unmetered on Telecom. That's all it is. nothing to do with EPG.

And in addition, CASPA will work on any ISP as well, but it will count towards your data usage if you are not on Telecom. Much like viewing youtube on a computer does etc.

In short, TIVO works if you have a broadband internet connection in your home and you live in a freeview HD terrestrial reception area of NZ and have a suitable UHF aerial etc.

OK while we are asking dumb questions : If I don't have a freeview box or internet connection can I use just a tivo box to receive and record channels?

I do have internet of course but what if I don't want to connect the tivo to it?

Can't see why not, although it will be quite awkard to manually program everything you want to record.

Thanks for the heads up. The 5 year extended warranty (available online) is a bit of a joke when all warranties are direct with TiVo/HybridTV.

The XL version of Tivo is selling at Harvey Norman in Aussie for $699 AU. I think $200 NZD is a pretty incredible deal for the 320 version. I've had one since the new year, and loving it.

I don't know if it will even work if you don't connect it to the internet. It won't be able to download the EPG and you also need to connect it to set it up/register it etc. Why would you not won't it connected? They come with wirless adapters too.

I too am intrigued to know why you wouldn't want to connect the TiVo to the internet!

Remember, the unit also comes with a wireless adapter included (and I'm sure this was something one paid an additional sum for when TiVo first launched here), so it's not like you need a modem or router near the TiVo, or need to run a network cable either.

Also, you'll also have no ability to programme the unit via the internet, and that's one of the things I'm loving most about the TiVo (so much quicker to use a full keyboard and mouse).

Anyway, can't see how anyone can lose if paying $200 - from my couple of weeks' usage I'd say it's got some frustrating idiosyncrasies but is totally worth the cost.

Apart from the 1TB drive, does anyone know whether the new model in Aus (called the XL or something) has any other significant differences to the 320 model?

When TiVo first launched here they were $920 and included the wifi adapter and also the home networking pack.

Currently have three TiVos here at home. Two in the lounge and the third in another room and all on the network.
