I'd be very happy to donate towards any costs to keep the EPG service running, I'm sure many others feel the same way.

Sadly my Linux/Python skills are rubbish but I'll keep my eyes open for anyone that fits the bill.

Wombat1:

Perhaps we could establish a funding page to support them through donations, ensuring they receive some compensation for their ongoing work. Without this, I doubt the EPG will continue much longer.

I would be happy to help financially, let's keep TiVo alive.

@Spong Happy to look at helping with the EPG fixup - Still Use a TiVo daily (along with my father too).  Have a Computer Science degree and done plenty of development and scripting over the years.

I feel that the further out the guide gets from reality, and as more channels turn into the dreaded "To be announced" this will lead to a fast decline of the remaining TiVo usage (at least in NZ)

Have to admit Linux and Python are not my strongest areas - very happy to put some effort in though.  My son is also over halfway through a Comp Science degree and his Python skills could be called upon too.

Questions I have:

  1. Are the AU and NZ EPGs separate? or maybe its all merged together?
  2. Are the AU EPG(s) suffering from the same problem from missing channels etc as NZ?
  3. Are there any docs on the EPG scraping process and the resulting TiVo EPG format?  It may be possible to work out directly from the code depending on its complexity.
  4. How would changes be tested? Don't want to send out garbage and make things worse🙃

My hope would be that this would be adjusting the existing code rather than a full rewrite.

Would suggest continuing on with the "Digital Ocean" server for the hosting (and keep paying the $) as this sounds a lot simpler than going through a rehost - it has largely worked well since the official TiVo EPG retired on us

Let me know your thoughts and if this is worth progressing

I'm just about to send a PM, and would urge you to make contact as it seems you're the man to take things further. Please check the newer thread where I ask for anyone able to help with this.

I'm not certain, as it's never been made clear, but I believe the Aussie and NZ EPGs are hosted on the same Digital Ocean hosted server, that's been coined the name "The Emulator". This effectively emulates the original Tivo service prior to being dis-established late in 2017. As you'll be aware, a modified Tivo PROM chip removes the need for signed software, and the updated Tivo software points to the emulator, rather than the old dis-established Tivo service.

I hear that there are some missing listings and inconsistencies in the Aussie EPGs which are far more diversified for their different regions than our NZ one. I'm not certain if the Aussie EPGs are created by our guy in NZ or elsewhere.

I maybe wrong, but I believe the EPG data is scraped from legitimate NZ sources on the said Linux box hosted by our guy, then processed into a form that's uploaded to the emulator.

This process would continue exactly as before in the hands of a new administrator, and help would be provided as required by our current guy. No re-writing of code will be required, but changes maybe required when something goes wrong, like when channel numbers are moved around.

I really have very little knowledge of how this is carried out, but once contact is made with the current guy, he should be able to fill in the blanks.

I can answer this one, most channels are working OK and we still using our Tivo for our day-to-day recording. There are however one or two that don't work, 74 (7Mate), 75 (7Bravo), and 96 (9Rush) if I call correctly, the only one that is an irritation for now for me is 7Mate. Also I can't comment if other states are having the same problem. I am in Brisbane.

I was pleased to see a couple of days ago that the EPG for most channels had come back (not Prime/Sky Open or Rush but most others) although TV3's EPG only had alternating Newshub live at 4 pm and 6 pm so was clearly wrong.  However, I now see that the EPGs for all channels on the TiVo end ether tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday.  Does anyone know what is going on here and whether this will be restored or is this the end of the EPG for the Tivo (so the end of the TiVo as a useful PVR)?

Please check the other thread here in the Tivo forum. @Fe31NZ has been hard at work, and has a full explanation there. Things have truly progressed and I suspect you'll be happy with the results.
