freitasm: I am disgusted with the fact that online services will be available exclusively with Telecom broadband.

Are we talking zero rated downloads on Telecom, or Telecom users are the only ones able to access online content? I am getting confused and doubt Tivo would want to lock customers in like that.

In saying that Telecom have Big Time, Slingshot are coming up with something similar, how long before there are unlimited download packages with other ISP's? Or better yet how long before ISP's without any Tivo deal decide to zero rate Tivo content anyway?

geek4me: Great news for Telecom customers, not so good for the rest of us!

As a TelstraClear cable customer I can kiss TiVo Goodbye. Anyway with my new Hyundai AH-3110 combination Terrestrial HD and Satellite receiver (including Satellite HD), with an attached USB hard drive I probably have everything TiVo has to offer except downloading of movies - and I can get those at the video store across the road for from $1 which will be cheaper than TiVo I'm sure.

Ditto.
Xbox + Digistar + Orcon + Civic Video = happy camper.

Well I for one am glad I moved back to Telecom and I dont have to use bloody sky anymore. Yay for competition. Well no sport but hey beggars cant be choosers.

I was keen for my parents to get Tivo but since they are fully on TelstraClear I don't think its gonna happen

If TC got Tivo, I expect the reaction would have been "Hmm, TC has got Tivo now" end of news.

I think the issue is more that you HAVE to be on Telecom Broadband in order to be able to get any of the downloadable content.

According to the Tivo website the EPG will still work from any ISP, its things like downloading movies that won't work

Disagree. The issue is that you're restricted to the one ISP (beaten to the point by DjShadow!). Doesn't matter who got the device, the opinion would be the same.

If TCL had the device I bet you'd see the exact same reaction. More so, I imagine as I'd hazard a guess that there are fewer with TCL than with TNZ...

Yes this not a anti Telecom thing, I have never used Telecom broadband so I am not passing judgement.

Its about a content service or put it another way an exclusive club type situation for some people.

Im suprised the goverment or the commerce commsion should not be looking at this as its anti customer and runs against fair play in the market place.

Its not like we have 5 Tivo like operators here in NZ and we could switch provider and use their Tivo experance.

The only other is My Sky.

If I had the ability to record a show that is played on TV, then I would do that, and watch it on my TV when I had the time, alternatively if it never showed on TV, I would get it by other means if I had no other options.

Anyway, with the whole TCNZ only hoopla, good move by TCNZ to secure a value added service, and to TivoNZ to secure the major ISP in the country as an unmetered provider so that you can better sell your product.

I wouldn't be too worried for choice as a consumer as it's only a matter of time till we have more options beyond MySky HDi.

I'm on Telecom but probably won't go near TiVO, well not until I can get into it's guts anyway ;-)

I'm rather nicely set up anyway.
Diginet DVB-Terrestrial recording set-top.
Yess DVB-Satellite recording set-top.
Dreambox DVB-Satellite recording and streaming set-top, this also has a sky card in it to legally access sky.
ADSL unlimited BigTime plan.
$2 new-release Mondays from the local video store, too easy, too cheap.

Has any one else noticed that Tivo will only be sold by Telecom?

There is choice. Free to air, free to air Freeview, Sky/MySky, Tivo

All of us will choose one or more of the above based upon content, setup cost, monthly cost.

If I wanted cable TV and broadband I would HAVE to go to Telstra. My choice. If I want a Tivo setup I can choose to got to Telecom or choose to go to MySky. My Choice.

Can we please stop using the acronym TCNZ when referring to Telecom New Zealand.

Historically on these forums:

Telecom New Zealand = TNZ
TelstraClear New Zealand = TCNZ
Vodafone New Zealand = VFNZ
