how is this different from other freeview boxes? I just assume that it would use the freeview epg data like all other freeview approved devices.

I know there has been some drama/excitement before over the copyright of tv listings but it seems a bit ott

@RockResearch yes... like the London tube map , TV listings are one of those things you don't assume to be intellectual property but in fact are.

you have to get the broadcasters permission to use them. Some like TV3 have histrionically given them away free others like TVNZ have charged. I remember in my student days our student mag published the listings they got for free and left the other columns blank with the reason why.

I'm of the opinion that tv listings are a prime example of what should be public domain... after all we own the frequency they are using to broadcast they could at least tell us what they plan to put on it for free.

This is going to be very interesting as the number of TiVo users increase.

Thanks, I always thought that is the sort of information that a station would like to get out via as many channels as possible. Treating it as a additional revenue stream seems odd. It's like a restaurant charging you to see the menu.

I don't like it but I can understand why Prime would be holding up but this makes no sense at all for Maori TV. Surely for an up and coming broadcaster their main goal would be to get eyes on their channel...

Why shut out a group of users? If they are angry at TVNZ this makes even less sense because they are encouraging people to stay with TVNZ and TV3.

I guess we are finding out the freeview is free to watch just not free to find out what's on...

The Tivo box is not actually Freeview approved. It also doesn't support MHEG5 and instead relies on an internet connection to download an enhanced EPG in it's own format.

Apparently Maori TV and Sky won't be giving their EPG data to Tivo any time soon. This stems from Maori TV's recent stoush with TVNZ and TV3 over the rugby world cup broadcasting rights, and Sky's concern about tracking viewers on Prime.

How silly...

Zero respect for Sky - they simply can't handle the competition and it shows. I'll never pay subscription for their commercial ridden service.

Tivo will not fly without the epg for all channels.

I certainly will not be buying.

Don't care about maori tv, but prime is a good channel.

The entire "season pass" feature gets b@ggered up if certain channels are not part of the EPG,

Opps, yeah we didn't record that particular occurance for you 'cause it was on one of the channels not giving us EPG,

Major FAIL.

Whats shows would you record, where the season pass requries recording on different channels? Or are you just implying it would not work on any channel without EPG? If thats the case, then any pre-set recording will not work, as it will fuction off the EPG and not 'start recording in 5 hours finish in 6 hours'.

This is definitely a FAIL for Sky and Maori TV.

When we got Freeview HD on it's release it took us all of two weeks to not bother switching to Analogue on the LCD TV to watch Prime, Now prime is available on Freeview HD we still don't watch it. I suspect this will have the same affect on the viewing of Prime and Maori TV on Tivo devices. People will not know what is on so will not watch those channels.

As far consumers are concerned we should be able to get EPG data from any source we see fit, in fact broadcasters should be falling over backwards to make sure their EPG Data is better than and compatible with more devices than the competitors.

As RockResearch suggests this is like a "restaurant charging you to see the menu".

The EPG data services provided by broadcasters need to change with the times. Print it on paper and pay as you have done. Download it electronically for display on a consumer device and it is free. Many many things are provided with comercial/personal use licenses, why not the EPG.

I am saying that Tivo and the like, make consumers channel agnostic, all they care about that "their show" was on some channel at some time,

To have some channels requiring you to manually look up to see if they have your show, and when it is on, or not, will simply put people off using the feature.

I've never understood why TVNZ doesn't play hard ball and refuse to let SKY use it's EPG data (like Prime is doing to them). I think they'd be an uproar if MySky users suddenly couldn't season pass TVNZ channels.

My dream is for a TiVo HD with a SKY Sports subscription added on.........but it'll never happen :-(
