Yes but they have nobody to blame but themselves here in NZ.

Everything that is wrong with the product doesn't need to be wrong. An idiot who probably spent years at University getting a marketing degree just launched a product that was doomed to fail right from the start because of their stupidity.

I sent my Sky decoder back some time ago sick of excessive charges for just the basic service.

Tivo is really a freeview setup box that has some additional functionality including some movies ondemand at no additional bandwidth costs (Telecom customers).

Choices are just get freeview DVR box, Itunes or Xbox as Sky doesn't just supply a VOD service.

Having tried all options it really comes down to your download costs which Tivo is the only one that has a end to end product (sales would increase if it wasnt exclusive).

NZHerald fail to even understand what they are writing about comparing only the box price and do not address that Mysky is always owned by Sky (unless I am mistaken).

It doesn't have to be just a freeview pvr though.
They could do a lot more things with it than they are now just with the Internet connection And make monthly fees as well as selling people the box. Having old movies on Caspa to rent @ $6.95 for 2 days isn't going to do it for them.

might as well get movies from fatso instead, same movies and a bigger selection and a lot cheaper and keep them longer.

Yeah I dumped the mysky box in November last year and don't miss paying the $96 a month at all. My viewing habits haven't really changed either with TiVo .

Yes Sky owns the box, but when the next generation of new boxes come out - they just replace it at no cost. We paid upfront for the first MySky 1 box nearly five years ago and when MySky HDi came out August 2008 they just came out and installed it for free for us. And another plus - a never ending Warranty on the box. So there are some advantages of "renting" from Sky.

Normally they charge and installation fee to change boxes when a new one comes out.
You must have been lucky not to be charged it.
They even tried to charge me the $15 a month for myskyhdi box changing from ord mysky which I refused to pay as I'd paid $699 at the start.
Which is all gone now the box has gone back.

I just paid $50 to upgrade from silver to HDi. I'd done the $600 deal for silver one.

Already had multiroom and they swapped non mysky decoder for my old mysky one, so now have two myskys.

Also got three months free multiroom, so it cost me $50 and saved me $75.

Getting paid $25 to upgrade not a bad deal in my books as was already paying multiroom.

If I was to go the freeview road, at present would go myfreeview as cost of Tivo higher one then one of these boxes, content in my view poor, content overpriced, and relies on internet connection for guide where as others over the air. Though two week guide info is a plus for it.

MySkyHdi + Hdi Ticket + SkyMovies + SkySports = $96 a month
+ second decoder @$25 = $96 + $25 = $121 a month.

Got way to expensive for me..

With multiroom, we and with everyone else that has multiroom, you don't pay the HD ticket.

You miss the point you cannot get the DVR from sky without having paid for at least the basic subscription.

I care less about watching sport ( I am not a bystander) Tivo is the one part there its only failing appears to be Caspa. However I would blame that one bs distibution rights having just set up a USA itunes account and brought a USA gift card so I can get HD 24.

Roll on when we can pay $100 for broadband, TV, movies, Phone and have acess to VOD on the one subscription.

I have broadband and phone via Telecom. Bought Tivo yesterday which means I now have TV and VOD all in one subscription / service. It's already here mate. Or am I missing the point?

Too many nay sayers about Tivo. What does my head in is how NZers are so quick to jump on and bash Telecom because of it's suggested monopoly here when SKY TV would arguably have the biggest monopoly in the country when it comes to TV content. Let's face it, we're getting robbed for the SKY service over here. I too looked at MyskyHDI and it's at very minimum $70-90 a month and that doesn't include HD content!

I'm going to have great pleasure in cancelling my sky subscription this week when my Tivo turns up.

People are bashing Telecom because they're totally confused by the service.

People don't realise that 99% of Tivo's functionality (with the exception of VOD) will work no matter what ISP you have. People thought that you need to have Telecom as your ISP to use the box.

When you cancel your sky they want 1 months paid notice as well. When I got my TiVo box the sky box sat here turned off for one month as I didn't realize this ...

What I hope to see is competition. Competition is the only thing that will drive prices down and push the quality of the content up.

I have phone+internet+tv (TiVo) via Telecom for $99 a month. I think the service is good but there is certainly room for improvment. This is a new market for New Zealand that will get better and better as each telco brings it's own mulitmedia service to the market.

As we have seen in the mobile market, a duopoly is only slightly less evil than a monopoly. We need more choice than just Sky and TiVo.
