And the fact that Casper is crap..

I didn't even bother setting Casper up.? I skipped that step.? I've got an Apple TV anyhow.

TBH looking at the content that is on Casper, it might as well not be there.? I think they should do away with that, and focus on selling it as an HD PVR.? That removes the whole discussion about Telecom and is probably the reason for the low sales at launch.

At $299 it is way cheaper than all the other PVR's on the market, and the UI is brilliant.

Casper should have been where TVNZ put all their on demand stuff. But they decided to go join their competion and setup a whole new platform, with what looks to be an inferior device. At least the tivo can record. Casper could always be updated in teh future, but I think their problem is getting the content, and getting enough customers to buy the, Lowering the rental price would help, I can't understand why they are so expensive, see the overheads are minimal.

ROFL... Trolling troll is trolling the TiVo discussions.

There isn't "sports channel". If someone wanted sports channel then TiVo (and Freeview in general) wouldn't be their choice.

I guess you know that, right?

Yeah, the more I read the more I think TiVo is a 'could have been' or maybe [hopefully] a 'will be' product.

It's backed by TVNZ, right? Can anybody think of a reason TVNZ isn't supporting it more with the On Demand stuff?  They support PS3 so why not a product they back?

I've been watching a bit of Auckland Daze recently at TVNZ On Demand, it's a rather funny satire of the 'Auckland scene'. Maybe it will come to TV one day but currently it's just on TVNZ On Demand. Surely they can't claim the have a hard time getting their own content?

Add in the likes Ziln TV and YouTube and you would be giving the others a real run for their money.

Looks like the thing has a pile of potential.

I guess the reason why there aren't supporting it and putting ondemand onto tivo, is because they got into bed with the new igloo device, and they see that as being more profitable. They possibly receive money for having it on the PS3?
SOnys IP tv channels could also have tvnz ondemand, like they currently have ziln and youtube and quite a few others too.

There used to be a sports channel, but TVNZ pulled it. Maori has a lot of sport. But Sky has most of the sports content agreements.

It also allows you to remote record from mytivo.co.nz - just like you can on mysky.

Igloo isn't a PVR though.  I can't see that being a huge success.  That surely is like launching a new VHS player in 2011!

Igloo has been debated at length on another thread.

I still think it makes little sense for TVNZ to launch the TiVo platform and then support it so poorly.

The partner was Telecom and sure that may not have been the best idea because if Telecom isn't your ISP then you figure your going to be at a disadvantage. Here in Wellington TelstraClear is popular because of the speed of the network. Having said that Telecom wasn't exactly throwing a TiVo at me when I told them I was switching to T/C, it may have made a difference.

Still I would think as TVNZ you think you are going to have a reasonable time controlling the future of a device which works in partnership with an ISP. Partnering with the guys who have spent nearly two decades stealing your lunch on a new device doesn't seem to make as much sense.

Agreed. I am comparing what I had, mysky without the movie and sport channels for $70 per month to Tivo. Of course there is no option for sports, but I never watched much anyway.

Why would you want TVNZ on demand if you have a Tivo? Anybody that asks that question is unfamiliar with Tivo in my opinion. I have a PS3 with the TVNZ on demand stuff, I think I have used it once.

Youtube works on most new TV’s nowadays. Plays realy great and in HD. I don’t see a need of this for Tivo. Tivo is missing the new release movies.

You wouldn't, but Auckland Daze or Reservoir Hill are only available on TVNZ Ondemand. My wife gets mad with the crappy Flashplayer interface or whatever it is, and therefor I cop some of (because if something on a computer doesn't work properly, then I must be able to fix it).
If TVNZ On Demand (or at least the content) was on TiVo that would be ideal.

TVNZ have written off the $17million they invested in TiVo and I don't believe they have any continuing involvement with it.
Even if they did I suspect that their contractual arrangements with programme suppliers would not permit them to broadcast via TiVo service - the copy protection security is not adequate for starters.

I used to use Replay Media Catcher to capture a recording of any programme I wanted from On Demand. They kept changing the format to try to block this but there was always a way around it. The ad files were always separate and obvious so you could easily delete them before combining the Part files for an episode. Last time I looked they seemed to be fragmenting the files into heaps of tiny fragments to make life harder for you though.

Generally now if I miss anything (imported) I just download the torrent for the ep I missed. The quality is usually better too.

New to this but require some help.
Looking to replace my old analog HD recorder - TiVo looks attractive, however, I cant see any way to input anything other than RF or Internet (and that seems limited to 'Casper').
So, can I record to Tivo from my old SD sky STB? - cant see any A/V type inputs.

You right. Its only possible if you could somehow combine the sky signal into the UHF input. And that would require some serious hacking.

Tivo is really limited to whats on freeview. If you going to want to record from another source, eg sky you probably better off looking at a better PVR which can record from multiple sources.

My advice, if you have sky, then stick to the mysky box. I believe sky has been giving the older mysky PVR's away recently to sky subscribers.

RF in only, no provision for any other external inputs
