rugrat: Is it only vdsl they're taking unlimited off for tivo users?

I'm on adsl and so far have had no letter. Don't think I'm a big user as only watch 4 to 5 hours netflix a week, 2 to 3 hours youtube, other then that nothing else I do is data intensive.

Nope. I'm on ADSL and I got the letter.

Letter just came this afternoon, I get the mail slower then everyone else, and I'm in the city.

Just says I seem to be using more then 40 GB, but doesn't tell me how much more?

I probably change to unlimited, but thinking of going naked to knock $10 off, then pay 2degrees $12 for unlimited mobile landline calling, that gives me the whole country instead of just local calls for an extra $2, plus not being tied to being at home to make calls. Most people are calling my mobile these days not landline.

Looked at changing isp's but some look like they're strugging with prime time netflix, ( to date having no probs with spark), could save $10 a month with snap (150 gig plan and eat nights would suit), but they charge for joining, and that fritzbox looks expensive, so would rather buy my own modem router, not interested in two year contract. Plus I need to know I can block public DNS in the router as well.

Maybe once 2degrees put something out in their own name, they'll make joining them easier.

we've had no prime time issues (apart from the same issues with Chorus capacity everyone has been having)
see: https://www.truenet.co.nz/articles/april-2015-urban-broadband-report-40

naked, unlimited, no term contract,  then get your minutes with 2Degrees.  BYO modem too.

$79 excactly what I'm paying now, looks good (realise no phone, and only email contact)

Questions:
1 Would my current technicolor modem work with it TG582n

2 What limitations does NAT put on things, will live games still work with it, like poker, will unotelly still see the one ip address for streaming to?

I don't fully understand NAT, but if all these things work could be interested.

And not cruical, but what is big pipes credit card policy, sparks one still has a bad taste in my mouth, otherwise I'd pay the $99 and be done with it, that's my biggest beef with them, realise I've had a good deal with how long internet has been unmetered with them and I'm thank full that it lasted as long as it did.

Thanks.

1)  yes.  should just work with no changes (assuming you haven't been fiddling with it too much yourself)

2) generally things that require someone to connect into you might cause problems - such as hosting game servers or seeding torrents.  Anything where you connect to someone else (e.g. downloading torrents, connecting to gaming servers)  should be fine.  Unotelly should still work fine.
If you do have any issues, you can bypass the CGNAT with a static IP address, which is a one-off cost of $45.
to give you an idea,  less than 5% of our customers choose to bypass the NAT

3) we only take credit or debit card for payment.  All payments are automatic each month, paid in advance . We don't have any 'convenience' fees or anything extra like that.  i.e. what you see on the website ($79 if you are looking at ADSL for example) is what you pay every month.

after reading this I wonder how many TiVo  owners still use these devices in NZ, my units have been in a cupboard in the garage for over a year now.

We currently use ours in our secondary lounge, and will be moving it down to our main lounge once we finally get rid of Sky.

Four still in use here.

I was confused when I first ready this topic, then I realised it did not apply to me - I have Spark unlimited plan on VDSL

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

And VDSL should be removed from the thread title, the unmetering/metering affects xDSL and Fibre

TiVo is a great device poorly implemented and managed in NZ  however recent changes with TV's being PVR's, Streaming services, On demand viewing and Freeview Plus and PVR capability coming to Xbox One this year  have rendered them mostly reduntant.

Anyone concerned that they have no recent usage history to gauge what plan they should move to after July 1, should not be concerned.

Monitor your usage via My Spark from 1 July until you get close to the nominal cap you are currently being charged for. By then you will be able to extrapolate your monthly usage and pick a plan accordingly.

I note that my letter also tells me I am using more than my current plan allows for (in fact it's way more than double that!) and encourages me to change before 1 July. Nah! I'll rely on the 80% warning messages and change when I need to...

Better still, just install the very useful Traffic Usage Checker from www.tuc.co.nz and you'll know how you're tracking at all times. I've left it running on my system (always showing 0% except when they "accidently" started counting data a few months back). If you start to go near your limit, just change plans and the new plan takes affect within 48hrs and starts the counter back at zero.

Now, if only I could keep my static IP without paying another $15 month...... I could jump to BigPipe or Snap, but I also need to keep faxability, not for faxing but to separate personal and business calls on our 2x numbers. Currently it only costs around $3 month for that second number.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

I use TiVo   all the time as my TV  doesn't have a digital  tuner it's my main tuner  / recorder.  I do have a Dish DVR sitting there for the day that the TiVo turns up it's toes or the EPG ends...

The Traffic Usage Checker works fine as line as you don't have two internet accounts tied to the same login..   I use it here at work to monitor our fiber ..

Poorly implemented is an understatement!  Have a look at TiVo in the US and what features they have!  Six (yes SIX) tuners, a massive HDD, inputs for terrestrial, satellite and cable (obviously the software is specifically for US services), full online monitoring via MyTiVo and administer your season passes remotely, being able to stream whatever you've recorded away from home.  Oh yeah, and apps for pretty much all of the major video on demand services, not just the one we have.

Current TiVo's would be the perfect solution for the NZ market for those not wanting numerous devices plugged into their TV to watch all the various VOD services or having to watch a small tablet or sit in front of a computer.  If Sky would play ball even their service could be run through TiVo.
