Very interesting developments. I have two TiVo units that I’d like to get modded. I’m in Christchurch - anyone with the PROM kits and skills? Thanks.

PM me and I'll pass on the details of someone in Christchurch who can supply a programmed PROM. I'm not certain whether he'll do the work himself.

I'll send you a message as well I wouldn't mind getting a couple of the PROM's myself to see if my skills are still capable of fine soldering.

I have 2 units in Auckland that I would like to have modded, but would want someone to change out the hardware components as well as load the new software when available.

Willing to wait and to pay a fair price for the work, what is a fair price? $100, $200?

I can do the chip swap for people in Wellington.  You will need to supply the chip and socket (if you want a socket).

I have the chip-quik desoldering kit he uses and that stuff is magical.

I have a limited number of programmed PROMs here in Auckland, but at this stage I'm not offering a chip install service, but that may change nearer the end of October. I'm happy to do the software load and HDD upgrade to 1TB or 2TB  etc should you choose that when things are finalised. Personally, based on what I've seen so far, I think there's quite some work to be done before the software is ready for release.

I may have a go at doing a PROM replacement myself (5 in total to practice on!?), but I'm putting together a couple of ODROID options to stream and record (with a new HDHomeRun Connect) that will take any pressure off.

Where are you based? You can have my one to experiment on - it's going to an ewaste site anyway.

This is all very interesting. Maybe someone will do a youtube video of the steps needed, and will potentially save at least some of these ending up as ewaste. Apart from the harddrives which are essentially consumables, I imagine the rest of the hardware could last a couple of decades if not longer, as long as freeview continues to be broadcast.I wonder if anyone has fitted an SSD of some type them. I still have old 80's computers that I kept when I was a kid, and they still work to this day.

I bit the bullet, ordered some eproms, sockets, decided to crank up my old soldering skills and got a cheap SMD rework station and a cheap microscope and my next free weekend will be dedicated to modding the 1st of our 3 tivo's, all going well the other 2 will get the same treatment

Good luck!  Out of interest which SMD reflow/rework station did you go for?
