As we have seen in the mobile market, a duopoly is only slightly less evil than a monopoly. We need more choice than just Sky and TiVo.

????
I don't think you undertand. In NZ we have FTA TV which is the current analogue channels, and Freeview which is the digital TV which has the normal free to air channels plus some others. In 2012 the free T v will be via Freeview only

The other option is Sky.

Tivo is not one option, that is a subset of Freeview FTA TV.

So, you have free TV versus Pay TV

If you get Freeview, you can use a low cost reciever, or you can get a PVR, there are many PVR's, TIVO being one of them.

It would be in Sky's interest to sell content to TiVo like sports matches for a single purchase. I am not paying $90 a month for a game or 2 of sport. However I would pay $6.99 for a game or 2 from TiVo.

That aint going to happen. Sky would rather a person to pay a fixed amount every month than that person to just pay a small one off amount when they want to watch something in particular.

Yep no competition means we all lose (except for Sky(net) of course).

I don't know about what you say - we all lose. We have MySky HDi multiroom and are very happy with the product and service, and I believe the pricing is fair for what we receive. No complaints here.

MySky HDi is an awesome piece of kit - I had it for a year before the TiVo. Its definately the better device in terms of ease of use (read myopinion). However paying $90 per month for watching a couple of Cricket matches a month doesn't stack up. On average MySky viewers watch 75% freeview! I'm glad your happy though.

Why dont you go down to the pub and nurse a beer while watching the occasional game of your choice?

It seems that 750,000 households see the value in paying fopr the service.  It cant just be Sky thats winning.

You might only watch a couple of cricket matches a month, so no it might not stack up for you. As a family with kids, we utilise nearly all the channels and have both HDi planners at least 3/4 full all the time ( BTW - absolutely none of it is free to air TV, none of us can stand the programming ) So as said above, a hell of alot of households chose to have it - it is optional though, not compulsory.

On average Sky homes spend 50-55% watching Sky channels.  As measured by Sky (SkyAdsales.co.nz).
I havent seen any viewership stats for MySky and would love to know the viewer behaviour so if you could supply your information source it'd be great.

Hey ockel I did read this somewhere but sorry I cant remember where. That site is interesting. Looking at the latest quarter stats though its more like 1/3 sky and 2/3 freeview. Which one do you look at. Who is AGB? Sky quote them as the source.

AGB McNair are the survey firm that meaure television viewership.  Essentially ~400 "peoplemeters" are installed homes around the country as representative measure of households viewing habits.  The peoplemeters measure by demographic, by daypart (time) viewership across all channels.

I think that you're slightly confused about Freeview.  Freeview is the umbrella organisation that markets the digital channels.  The numbers you're quoting are Sky and analog FTA television.  To my knowledge AGB do not measure digital FTA (or Freeview) audiences - or if they do I havent seen any viewership statistics.
But essentially you're right across all homes Sky accounts for ~26% of audiences (all households 5+) with FTA ~70%.  But recall that Sky is only in 47% of homes so it has 30% of all homes and a much higher share in Sky homes.  Hence the ~50% viewership in Sky homes.

Bear in mind that Freeview (both DTT and satellite) are in 20% of households.  This includes those households that may or may not have Sky.  According to Stats NZ Sky accounts for 47% of homes, TelstraClear HFC cable 4% and Freeview (ex Sky) 10%.

If you want the AGB data you can pay for it (as the advertising agencies do) but its not cheap.  I tend to rely on the TV companies to proclaim their audience share.  They do it to garner advertising $$$.

Maybe I should have said Caspa, rather than TiVo... Sky is the only serious player in the paid TV market. This is a monopoly. This is bad for consumers. Caspa is making a start by competing with Sky's pay-per-view business. Even if the Caspa service is a major success we still only have a two players in the paid TV market. This is a duopoly. This is also bad for consumers as we have seen in the mobile market.

We need more consumer choice in the paid TV market.

There is plenty of choice in the PPV market.  Blockbuster, Video Ezy, and all your local video stores.

With our tiny population, there is not enough revenue to support multiple pay TV broadcasters all competing for a slice of what's on offer - it won't happen in a long time. I personally like it the way it is, with Sky you know what you get ( they have it all ) and I don't want six STB's on the shelf to have to switch to watch something in particular.

Are you blaming Sky???

Sky has been here for 20 years give or take. Who is to blame if true Pay TV is a monopoly? Not Sky, they don't have a copyright on Pay TV here. They just happened to be the first
