This is becoming more and more common - it almost needs legislative correction devices are being made bricks because someone decides they aren't going to support them anymore there should be a responsibility to either open up the device to firmware mods or at least a final update that allows the device to function relatively well.

Mysky was as good --- at least before they made the fonts hard to read. At the time i dumped mysky, the changes they made caused the UI to slow down and it was harder to read onscreen text.

Its good now, I got it back after a year, last Dec. Very good UI, easy to get to everything

Honestly, all I've ever paid was the $200 to buy the TIVO unit on TradeMe. I have never used CASPA, etc.

So, I've been having a free ride ever since I got my TIVO.

Thanks for a great, dependable piece of hardware. I will seriously miss it.

I agree. I would have been happy to pay a subscription to maintain the EPG & hardware support. I think Hybrid under-appreciated how much Tivo users like the system.

Yes tuner wise it will still work as it does now.

You'll just get no smart features anymore, such as booking a season pass etc, as the EPG won't have any information and the TIVO unit won't know when any programs are on/supposed to start etc.

It's like it's been disconnected from the world, abandoned, alone, scared, frightened, confused...

And I presume with no current EPG, you won't even know what you are watching or recording, or at least the Tivo won't be able to provide that. Waaaaaaaaa.

Just like the analog days of no EPG..

It's a proprietary product, and still in use in other parts of the world, so I don't think there's much hope of that.

Hope to be wrong obviously, but don't feel confident about an alternative given it's TIVO tech.

You should be able to tell, using your eyes and ears, but no, the TIVO will only know what channel it's on.

Are there any smarts associated with the channel scanning and channel naming?

This discussion just got me wondering how much the TIVO relied on the external data coming in. I had assumed it was for the EPG, but did it include any info about the channel name etc? Does TIVO use the small EIT now/next data broadcast on terrestrial at all? Maybe not.

I wonder how the unit will get on long term, even in terms of naming new channels it finds etc.

I said here a couple of years ago that TiVo could do a subscription system here but was shouted down by everyone who said that they paid for a lifetime EPG and that's how it was going to be. Now the life support is going to be turned off.

Man I've been on about that here for years. Freeview provides a full EIT data EPG on the satellite service, but only now/next data on the terrestrial service. That stingy short sighted approach has prevented many developments from working here in NZ over the years, dating back to the likes of Sony's Play TV for PS3, the Magic TV native EPG, microsofts built in media centre etc. There was all this talk of extended red button type services that justified the EPG decision, but it never came to anything. It was a very restricted practise type move, and has only been helped over the years by clever people successfully extracting the data out of the MHEG5 stream.

Rant over, and it probably wouldn't have helped here as TIVO has never used an over the air EPG source. Their 14 day EPG did smarts like assign a type to a show etc, so did more than the 7 day freeview option.

As an aside, MySky is a totally viable alternative (albeit with a cost obviously) but it really is pretty simple and looks similar but more HD than the SD interfaces we got here in NZ on TIVO.

IF the initial TIVO launch wasn't as bungled as it was, this may well have still be going in NZ, AND we probably would have been provided with a modern hardware option by now.

As it stands, they've been hanging in there a simply as they could to see out a CGA reasonable time period I suspect, before switching it off and forgetting it ever happened.

As others have said, a complete joke, as the UI and overall package was years ahead of anything else and still punches well today. I got mine for $199 with the wireless adaptor included (albeit at runout pricing post Telecom failure).

Is there anything even similar for that price now today, 5 years later?

Noooo, I'm so gutted to hear this. We have had several Tivos and still have 2 in use. I was so pleased they kept the support going the last few years as it is an excellent free to air PVR.

This was such a stuff up with the marketing in New Zealand. Selling it only through Telecom initially instead of through stores such as Noel Leeming, who could explain and recommend it. Those who would benefit most ie non Sky users, just didn't understand the PVR technology and it's benefits at the time it was introduced. It just wasn't given a chance to succeed. What a shame. Glad we've had it for the last few years and only other Tivo users will appreciate what a lovely easy device it was to use. Very sad :(

Yep, Telecom right royally stuffed that up - I recall it was initially selling for $799 or something? They allowed you (if you were a Telecom broadband customer) to not count any data used via such things as CASPA via the Tivo. But you all know how pathetic CASPA was....

I'm so sad about this. I got my Tivo when Telecom was doing the deal where you pay $10/month for 3 years, total price being $360.

I refuse to go to Sky. So it looks like these are my options for something to come close to replacing Tivo functionality?

For giggles I thought I'd see how TiVo Australia were covering it, not surprisingly identical... EXCEPT...

Apparently Australian users have option of buying a discounted "Fetch TV" (https://www.fetchtv.com.au) through Harvey Norman for current active TiVo subscribers with no ongoing costs for the basic package. You just have to register at https://myaccount.mytivo.com.au/tivoswapout for the swap out offer.

The specs of the box look brilliant and also offer a cheaper Fetch Mini device which basically streams from the main device. Also looks like they took some queues from Igloo and have multiple streaming channel packs plus a Netflix app.

WTF? Where's the NZ model??

Yes just saw that as well. Guess us Kiwis don't count.. Even the $6 channel packs you can get with it are interesting..
