Maybe I should have said Caspa, rather than TiVo... Sky is the only serious player in the paid TV market. This is a monopoly. This is bad for consumers. Caspa is making a start by competing with Sky's pay-per-view business. Even if the Caspa service is a major success we still only have a two players in the paid TV market. This is a duopoly. This is also bad for consumers as we have seen in the mobile market.

We need more consumer choice in the paid TV market.

Pay TV is ridiculously expensive to get involved in - Sky took a serious risk in even setting up in the first place (but it did pay off).  Can you blame other providers for not wanting to get into that business?

Also, it's an oligopoly not a duopoly - have you forgotten TelstraClear cable with its pay TV offering?  (Even if they appear to only rebroadcast Sky content - but they do so much cheaper!)

Are you blaming Sky???

Sky has been here for 20 years give or take. Who is to blame if true Pay TV is a monopoly? Not Sky, they don't have a copyright on Pay TV here. They just happened to be the first

Whoa - misquoted.  Not me.  That would be SpencerHarvey.
Personally I think Sky does a pretty good job.  The past is littered with paytv startups (anyone remember FirstMedia??).
Sky has invested in platforms (and capacity) and content that has allowed them to attract new subscribers and grow.  There are plenty of people in these forums that criticise Sky for pricing/packages.  I think they could be more innovative (how long did it take to get RemoteRecord!) but I think that can be said for pretty much every major operator in the NZ market.
I think they offer a good product and package it with monthly subscription rather than advertising.  But at the end of the day it doesnt matter whether its a subscription based model or an advertising based model - if you dont serve up the right product you wont get the eyeballs and the business model will fail.

Ultimately Sky might be the only serious player in the paytv market but its not the only player in town when it comes to broadcasting entertainment.  And people always have the opportunity to choose not to subscribe.  You dont get the opportunity to not see advertising in FTA - its an inconvienence.  Much like the inconvienence of having to go to the video shop if you want to rent a movie.

You surely jest.  TelstraClear pay TV offering.  They trashed that when they took over Saturn and sold out to Sky..
