I can't add anything here that hasn't already been said. Suffice to say I'm not surprised but still gutted and earlier contemplated a second bereavement day this week. The UI despite being around since 2009 in my opinion is still the best when compared to other PVR's I've seen including MySky. The unit itself again given its age still is a pretty responsive device.

+1 from me for a community EPG hack. Perhaps it could be hosted on Amazon AWS and still not have the outage issues we've had recently haha.

But is it even worth it? The components will probably start to fail on (my) 6 year old device in the reasonably near future - I mean, how long is the HDD going to hold on for?

I already replaced my remote twice - in the end I settled on a Harmony.

I'm thinking it's not worth it. I've already had the fan fail (which I replaced) in one of my two Tivo's. I think the day has come to accept the inevitable - unfortunately and sadly.

For giggles I thought I'd see how TiVo Australia were covering it, not surprisingly identical... EXCEPT...

Apparently Australian users have option of buying a discounted "Fetch TV" (https://www.fetchtv.com.au) through Harvey Norman for current active TiVo subscribers with no ongoing costs for the basic package. You just have to register at https://myaccount.mytivo.com.au/tivoswapout for the swap out offer.

The specs of the box look brilliant and also offer a cheaper Fetch Mini device which basically streams from the main device. Also looks like they took some queues from Igloo and have multiple streaming channel packs plus a Netflix app.

WTF? Where's the NZ model??

Yes just saw that as well. Guess us Kiwis don't count.. Even the $6 channel packs you can get with it are interesting..

Many of those $6 channels look to be 'owned' by Sky here in NZ.

A pity - I would happily fork out $6-7 a month for the Variety addon...

But I don't want anything to do with SkyTV.

Did some Googling and appears a puff piece about VOD services in the Herald, Fetch TV was mentioned as hoping to launch in NZ later that year (2015)

I am surprised that, on this "geekzone" forum that we are up to page 5 and nobody has mentioned MythTV.

Yes my wife is dissappointed in the news recieved this morning that her precious TiVo will effectively die.

MythTv though is my current device of choice.

There is an NZ MythTV forum too and many NZ "gurus" happy to help.

It has all of the features you can think of and more.

We have a separate "backend" in the garage and 6 "frontends" all running via Kodi.

It also has a web interface so recordings can be managed from anywhere.

Terrestrial EIT data is available for at least 7 days too (contrary to an earlier post).

Back in the day http://www.oztivo.net/twiki/bin/view was the rage. Working in NZ too (I had two). Sadly only series 1 TiVos and I dont know if they even are still in operation with OzTivo now. Pages seem very old. NZ Tivo is series 2 I believe.

MythTV is installed on a computer.

Any "geek" could do it - you don't have to be an ubergeek.

The actual devices work perfectly and could continue working for years. Even if a harddrive fails of can be replaced. Consumer says ATV sold have an expected min life of 10 years. Pretty poor they aren't offering any compensation at all. Not good that they are treating kiwis worse that Australian customers by not offering anything. I am wondering if they were waiting it out for a period of time. Surely they would have known about this for a long time. It's going to also create a lot of new ewaste.

"Lifetime license" refers to the lifetime of the product, not your lifetime. If the product is discontinued, that's its lifespan. End of product, end of life. Kaput.

You could try, would be fun to watch really, but given the service has ended, you've reached the end of the service lifetime.

You'd be debating the definition of lifetime, which could easily be conceived as free until the service ends, which it's going to.

Or you could say your lifetime, or the lifetime of the hardware etc.

They mythTV option is worth a go really. Is there a myth TV or Kodi front end for Xbox One? If so then yeah, I could whip up a tuner and book recordings through that.

Yes and my product isn't dead yet. It still has life. They are artistically killing it by removing essential features. If my device had failed then I would agree that the lifetime license dies with the device. But my product hasnt died.

Any settlements make are often confidential. If people were to make any claim they would need to do it on a case by case basis with the retailer.

I suspect many people on here for their tivo free as part of a contract. Although many people did pay for them.

Does this mean that if the device crashes and restarts that it will fail to restart due to the network connection failing?
