I picked up another one on Wednesday, now running 3 tivo's, so we've basically got any possibility covered for recording and with the ability to share the programs between devices and the computer it works out really well.

Yes funny that. They needed to be sold in big box retailers from the beginning for them to be successful, and I think everyone knew that. Not sure if it is now too late.
That deal for $199 only applied to 1000 units nationwide, but I doubt they sold out, as I saw a huge pile on Wednesday when the deal ended.

You mean for TVNZ / Hybrid TV Services to realise this. I'm sure Telecom were well aware that if they had competition, Telecom would loose out completely.

It's not just that - the sales and promotion by Telecom was simply appalling! When Tivo first came out at circa $900 I was interested in purchasing. I went into two Telecom shops, both of which were prominently displaying units, and asked some fairly straightforward questions. In both cases no one in the shop knew any more than the price, and that they had a pamphlet they could hand me. They couldn't even tell me what it did other than "it's needed to receive Freeview". In both cases, the unit was set up for demo, but they couldn't show me how it worked, and admitted that they didn't know how to demonstrate it - although one staff member gave it a go. In one case they tried to be helpful and attempted to go to the website to find out more, but didn't actually know what the url was!
Not the most stunning product promotion in the history of retail!
If Telecom had displayed them prominently, promoted them, and had sales staff who knew something about the product then I suspect they would have done a whole lot better.
At least the sales people in Leemings have been trained to know enough to push the product to prospective customers.
