No, I think you are being too lenient there. It's a Telecom brochure, sure, but you can only buy TiVo from Telecom stores, so when John Doe reads

"To use TiVo you must have Telecom broadband and a landline. Charges apply for these services."

John Doe will think "to use TiVo I must have Telecom broadband and a landline" when actually it should clearly indicate "To use TiVo you must have a broadband service from any ISP, to enjoy the complete TiVo experience you must have a Telecom broadband account".

It's very different. Customers often read what's on the paper and don't know better.

I suppose we'll find out when/if they are made to change the wording. Honestly, I think it would backfire on them more than anything. This John Doe you talk of is probably more likely to say "Oh, I can't get TiVo because I'm not with Telecom" rather than "I should change to Telecom to get TiVo".

By the way, I am flying up to Auckland 29th October for a meeting with Hybrid TV and Telecom - that's when they are introducing the devices to journalists and bloggers, plus announcing the official release date.

you need a broadband connection (any ISP) to use the EPG on a TiVo. To use the OnDemand type service you need a Telecom Broadband connection.

Correct. Now read again what seems to be in the Telecom leaflet as reported:

It does give the impresson it only works with Telecom's broadband, right? If this is exactly what is written then it is misleading.

Does anyone have a copy of this leaflet to upload a picture please?

yes, I thought he was asking whether you need a Broadband connection at all, which you definitely do.
(well, unless you want to use your TiVo box as a doorstop or something

)

In that case the last statement is totally false.

correct, it does seem misleading. it should say something like
"to use the Tivo downloadable content service you must have a Telecom Broadband etc...."

The FAQ online is better worded.

no, that is not correct, to access the downloadable content at all (other than the EPG) you must have a Telecom broadband connection

Ok, it still is misleading though. Wonder if I should make a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority.

Edit: I have laid a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority. Will wait to see what they say.
