Thank you to @spong for the socket and programmed prom last weekend.

I tried to change the prom today, I have to say I have not changed a SMD IC in 20 years and I failed :-(

So I have a Tivo that has pins 19 ( DQ5 ) and pin 20 ( DQ6 ) pads lifted, if someone thinks they can fix it you can have it.

Otherwise I will scrap it for parts.

Is there anyone in Auckland with the proper tools for the job that can assist.

TENKAN: Hi there Spong, as you are in the know for everything tivo, will we still be getting subtitles/captions with out any issues? On all channels or just a few as now.

I'd hardly be someone who knows everything Tivo, but from my limited understanding, I believe subtitles/captions are dependent on whether the broadcaster decides to include them, and the Tivo has no say in this. I think the situation will exactly as it is now, before and after modification. Someone with greater knowledge of these things will know more.

Yeah, it's no walk in the park. All I can say is, it gets easier the more you do. My feeling is that if the PC board has lifted tracks now, it'd be easier to replace the chip without using a socket now.

@SATTV I'm willing to have a go at fixing it for you. When you lifted the pads is the trace from the pad still around to some degree or did it get pulled off as well?

An update on PROM chips and the Software Update process to come.

I received a shipment of 58x pre-programmed PROM chips from Darren today, and more sockets arrived on Friday, both sooner than expected, so anyone whos been waiting for them, should have them soon. If anyone would like PROMS and sockets, or would like them replaced in your Tivo here in Auckland, please PM me. I'm prepared to do small quantities for now, and the software update when it is ready for release.

As mentioned previously, the software is not quite ready yet. Installation of the software update will be fairly simple. You'll need a USB memory stick (4GB or up should be fine) and a PC with a spare SATA connector or a USB to SATA adapter. The document will be easy for most Geeks to follow. Basically you'll download a Puppy Linux ISO and create a bootable USB stick using a small Windows app. You'll then extract the contents of a zip file (containing the patch and utils) into the root of the USB stick. You'll then connect your Tivo hard disk to either of the SATA connections above, and set your PC to boot from your newly created USB stick (This can be a challenge for some modern Win8/10 PCs with secure boot). From there, the process is simple and menu driven. You'll choose your Tivo drive from the list of drives it finds, and great care has been taken to ensure it only patches Tivo drives. The final installer will likely have a few new features that I haven't seen yet in the test versions. Once complete, you reattach your Tivo drive. This process should allow you to keep all of your recordings intact. I think it's likely you'll need to recreate your Season Passes etc, and it maybe necessary to "Clear program information and ToDo List" from the "Restart or Reset" Menu, before doing a forced Network connection to the new OzTivo Mothership to get the new EPG data, but that step hasn't been confirmed yet.

After a bit more cleaning I can see the tracks, it should be repairable by someone with the right tools.

Tivo Prom rework I am not quite so upset now.

I have one in my garage I am going to attempt the replacement. Is it necessary to connect it to a network for an update first or does it not matter ?

No. The PROM replacement doesn't impact on anything at all. All it does is allow modified software to run when it becomes available and is installed.

Thought I'd check to see what firmware versions our tivos are running on prior to mod chip install. I have a 1tb unit that was on 11.3b8-xxx that just recieved the push to 11.3b10 this morning after newtwork connect and restart.

But our main 2tb tivo is stuck on 11.3b6-xxx and no matter how many network connections and restarts I perform it simply wont upgrade. Anyone else had this issue? The 2tb has been always on to date but I haven't picked up on it still being on older firmware. I fear this may have ramifications of being able to apply the software patch when it is publicly released.

Thoughts anyone?

As has been mentioned above, the aftermarket patch will likely take into account whichever software is currently on the TiVo being patched.

The official update coming out from TiVo at the moment is to lesson the blow to owners once TiVo pulls out altogether. This includes syncing the time from the internet (an not relying on the inbuilt time clock), that sort of thing. None of which is important to anyone who is going to go on and patch their TiVo.

Advice at this stage is to relax, sit back and let the simply amazing developers to their thing. For example, my unit is now offline, sitting waiting until after TiVo depart and the developers have instructions to proceed. I have no intention of setting it all back up just to get an official goodbye software update from TiVo, as I know I'll be patching to aftermarket software when it becomes available.

What you can do right now is get your PROM chip replaced, so that the unit will allow non standard software to run. After that, it's time to chill for a while, and give thanks and space to those who are working away on this new software.

I can say with near certainty that your machine running that very old 11.3b6-xxx software has missed the bus. It won't get either of the following official updates and the new community software will very unlikely patch that drive either. The decision was made to patch the latest 2x versions only. However all is not lost, although any recordings you may want to keep will be lost. It'll be necessary to put an image from one of the latest two versions onto your drive, then patch with the new software once released. I can do that here.

Current state of the new Tivo software etc

A new "pre-release" version of the new community software/patch was released to testing late last night. It can patch either the latest official 11.3b10 that has been pushed over the last few days or the previous 11.3b8 software versions, and could end up being the final release if all works as expected. I'm currently in test mode.

The developers suggest that it's fine to allow the latest official software to be installed, as it means that one of the utilities needed to keep your Tivo alive that was needed with the earlier software, won't be needed if you have the newer software, so if your Tivo has been disconnected from the net, maybe it's worth reconnecting, considering tomorrow is when the big plug will be pulled. Also, this allows you to top up your EPG to tide you over the next couple of weeks. Connect manually a couple of times to be sure. Hopefully not too much longer, but please don't ask when. It'll be ready when it's ready.

Thats gutting. The 2TB has alot of programs to watch on it. I can take an image from the 1 TB. I don't know how it missed the update. And i assume it wont update from 11.3b.6-xxx to 11.3b.10-xxx. Missed the boat at some point. Unsure what to do to save all the recorded media apart from slow manual transfer between tivos on the network. Any bright ideas welcome.

I have a unused TiVo that was still on the orginal firmware & had never been set up. Presumably loaded with 11.3b6-xxx software. I unpacked it this afternoon to check it prior to tomorrows end of service.

After going through initial setup & the two required connections to the TiVo mothership to get setup info & then EPG data. Then I followed with two further forced connections over a two hour period & lastly a restart.

It now has the latest 11.3b 10 firmware & end of service warning. Obviously this is a much easier & better option than restoring a later version image to the hard drive.

For those sitting on these unused TiVos if you are able to set up these machines and try several forced connections and through in a couple of restarts as well.

Hopefully your unit will update to the latest & final firmware & be ready to take the new software patch(s) when available.

Dont procrastinate. Hook it up & do it now. The countdown is ticking...
