I have a unused TiVo that was still on the orginal firmware & had never been set up. Presumably loaded with 11.3b6-xxx software. I unpacked it this afternoon to check it prior to tomorrows end of service.

After going through initial setup & the two required connections to the TiVo mothership to get setup info & then EPG data. Then I followed with two further forced connections over a two hour period & lastly a restart.

It now has the latest 11.3b 10 firmware & end of service warning. Obviously this is a much easier & better option than restoring a later version image to the hard drive.

For those sitting on these unused TiVos if you are able to set up these machines and try several forced connections and through in a couple of restarts as well.

Hopefully your unit will update to the latest & final firmware & be ready to take the new software patch(s) when available.

Dont procrastinate. Hook it up & do it now. The countdown is ticking...

That's good news, and it seems perseverance won out in the end. I did 2x additional restarts on my new unused one without success, but this would have been over a 1x hour period only. I agree. Get in there real quick while you can. Last chance, unless some miracle happens. I'm wondering whether those software updates will remain accessible for a while, even when the EPG stops? I don't think anyone except Hybrid know that.

I want to know, if I get my Tivos modded up with the new PROMs and the new software to go with it, would my Tivo Desktop still work. I bought the Tivo Desktop software a few years ago in order to get the Media Access Key so I could use the multi-room viewing feature, such as transferring anything from the playlists to any other Tivos in the house as well as to my pc. Will this feature still work? I really do hope so as this is the feature I really love with Tivo as there is nothing else on the market in NZ that can do this. Also I will have to get someone to do all the updated stuff to my Tivos as I can not do it. Will there be an Electronic Repair Shop that could take on this job, say on the North Shore or anywhere in Auckland for people like me who do not have the skills to do it themselves.

Hybrid has stated that if you have the Home Networking Package (as I do) you'll still be able to move recordings from the Tivo to your PC. Moving between Tivos is something that we don't know for sure will continue, but since the media access key remains in place post modification, we certainly hope so, and during the testing we've been doing, it looks good so far. There are a few unknowns here. Even the brilliant community developers can't say for sure. It will be important that you don't do a full clear and delete on your Tivo, as when the official Tivo mothership goes off air, that functionality would disappear(although plans are there to resolve this). There's no reason to do this anyway, but it would be wise to keep an image backup of your drive, or better still upgrade to a new hard disk and keep the original 8yr old drive for a backup so that the HNP remains with your machine in the event of drive failure.

Anyone confident in doing the prom change and done with success. I’ve attemped, got the old chip off but can’t get the socket on without destroying it. It’s proving way too hard to solder, so don’t want to do on my main unit now myself.

Hard to see in the photo but no lugs soldered in yet. What you see is clean solder left on the pcb below each lug as I’ve done heaps of bigger pcb work in the past to know not to bother cleaning the solder off as it only leads to ruining the pcb connection itself and instead better to use the solder that’s there, so long as it’s clean, which it is.

Yep got a flux pen.

The problem is I be never worked on such a small socket before in fact too small for without a magnifying glass to work with, so I suspect I might end up soldering things together or melting the socket itself, as the corner pins especially are really short.

So it’s a case of do I risk it and make a mess. At least this is a not worried if poke it unit as work mate wasn’t fussed. But would I risk my own unit when I come to that.

Just wanted to pop in and say thank you all, it's been a pleasure.

The service does end on the 31st, I'm going to pre-empt any excitement if you see your STB's still connecting in, as the actual servers themselves will go down a little while after.

It's been a great run, we all love our TiVo's and I can assure you, my spousal unit is none too happy either.

I'm thinking of listing TiVo modification service on Trademe, to hopefully come to the attention of people that are unaware that there is a community service available. Hopefully it will save a few TiVos from landfill (and to save their owners from a lesser product).

My main concern is that there will be too much interest, but of course I can choose not to relist if someone hits 'Buy Now'. And that people will expect that because they paid money there will be a certain level of EPG service.

Alternatively I/we could just buy units cheap and then relist once modded, but I think noone will adopt TiVo that doesn't already have it.

Any thoughts?

I'd be inclined to wait until we have proven bug free modded tivo's out there working. The comeback would be my concern. There's a big difference between 'retail' expectations and 'enthusiast'.

Not to sure I would want that responsibility. Would the service also come under the consumer guarantees act?

Our TiVo case fan spat the dummy a few months ago and I have not been able to find a new one.

It seems that case fans are measured across the case (not between the screws or diagonal) so I need a 70mm fan.

Does anyone know where I could buy one or does anyone plan to ditch their TiVo and would be prepared to send me their fan?

I replaced one some 18 months ago. Purchased it online. I'll check the details tonight and let you know.
