mrkgoo: For clarity, I was referring to the Noel lemming outlet centre. They had about 10 of them on clearance for $99. I called back earlier in the week and asked more carefully and they told they were refurbished units with 3 months warranty. Given the shaky history of some units, I gave it a pass.

Yeah, I would have gone new, plus you are protected by the CGA after the warranty runs out.

I was just wondering how the CGA treats this sort of thing. Plus I wonder if something basic is behind most of the faults anyway.

just a couple of times been on special at $199. Honestly even at $299 it is a great buy. I never realised how wonderful they were until I bought mine and havent regretted it.

Don't forget - just because the advertised price is $299, it is unlikely this is the best price NL or B&B will give you on the TiVo. As I documented earlier on GZ (either this thread or elsewhere in the TiVo forum), I went in and asked for their best price - both were willing to do it for $249. (Do note that I did hit issues with one store not able to enter this override price in the system, but the other (B&B) had staff which knew how to do it.) Of course, in my case they went back to $199 10 days later, but them's the breaks!

well i went into local NL and got a TiVo for $250, deal done and done. Now anything I should know about firmware etc before i sent it up?

Plug it in and have fun, post back here if you need help/advice on using it

I'm loving the TiVo but just have one question, every now and then I loss sound randomly and a message pops up on my Sony TV KLV-32V300A saying "unsupported audio signal check your device output" so you get picture but no audio, but if you change channels the audio comes back no problems and you can return to the original channel that had the audio issue and the issue is gone.

My question is this a TiVo issue, a HDMI cable issue or a TV issue?

I also have a Sony Bravia TV, similar model to the post above and have also started seeing this message in the last few weeks. In fact I think it started when I got a Harmony Remote but don't know if that is related or not?
I always presumed it was an aerial issue, although I do have good reception.

most of my channels are around 85% with U and TVNZ7 around 75% strength

I have been getting that as well. Change channel fine, change back and sound is fine. I also have it connected to Sony Bravia but a 26BX300. It also didnt record my season pass of ww2 in colour on prime so was thinking maybe faulty. Obviously not.
BTW season pass is set to record all(duplicates)

Hi I just wanted to thank yo jonathan18 for the info. I printed out the post and took to NL they made the price $299 to $249 with no fuss. They said that they can make it to $199 only when Telecom says so. And if you buy at $249 and price dropped to $199 within 7 days (or 14days I cannot remember) they will match the price and refund the difference. Started using Tivo, it is great.

No worries - and they'll honour any drop in price over the following 7 days: I remember it was 10 days for mine when it dropped again to $199, so just missed out! Even at $249 it's still a bargain.

Hi All,

Just seeking your views on a refurbed Tivo unit. I understand Noel Leeming will be selling them from $99 later this week with a 3 month warranty. I'm looking to ditch Mysky and given I can't find stock of new Tivo units wonder if this is worth a go? Not sure what happens after 3 months if it dies.

Sometimes refurbs can be more reliable than the standard unit. I've mentioned this before, but if there is a common failure point amongst all the DOA units reported (perhaps capacitors etc) then this would be good to know. And, if this common failure point has been rectified in the refurbished units then it should be pretty safe to grab one.

I don't know how the CGA goes on a refurbed unit?

The good thing is at least they probably won't be DOA units. FOr $99 you can't really go wrong, that is cheaper than a standard settop box.

Agreed, a great buy really.

Just I'd like to know what needed refurbing is all. Like what is the cause of the DOA units, and if these are something else, then what was wrong with these ones? Reason I ask is many electronic devices are failing after a few years these days, and any info from those in the know is really beneficial for us owners down the line.

eg Zinwell and Onkyo receivers are both know to have heat related problems with dry capacitors.

I guess for $99 I could by 2 units. Apparently they are all being tested so should hopefully not have any DOA. I am curious to see what happens if they die though given there is no stock in NZ. I wonder if there is a repair agent or unofficial repair outfit.
