As the TiVo doesn’t have an Antenna loop port, I can’t plug my TV in and use the same external roof antenna. (Don’t you miss the simple VCR days?!?)

What I’m looking for is (One aerial input to two devices):
I need a 1 x Female to 2 x Male Coax splitter.  The external UHF antenna cable from Wall ends in a Male connector, the two extension leads from the TV and TiVo end in a Female connector.

Where can I get a converter to do this job?  Tried DSE, JB-HiFi etc, the local Tawa (Wellington) TV/Aerial shop were most unhelpful, and Trade Me was a nightmare trying to get a straight answer.

PS: NO I can’t us rabbit ears for the TV as Tawa has crappy TV reception.

Phil :)

As I am still at home, enjoying my first coffee, forgive me if I get am a little confused (or confusing) ;)

Assuming you have a cable from your wall, with a male end, that would usually just go straight into the TiVo/TV, the usual format is a 1->2 splitter, with female ends all round, then an extra two cables.

That kit should be available from most reputable places that sell TV's

Just something to watch out for, if your signal strength is already borderline, an unpowered splitter may cause signal problems. (powered are available, but obviously more expensive)

Are you sure you don't have the genders backwards? The cable from the TiVo and TV should end in a male (Belling Lee / PAL) connector.
The socket on the wall should be a female connector (I assume Belling Lee / PAL).
So you could plug this splitter directly into the wall and then plug your TV and TiVo cables into it. If you need an extension from the wall, or don't want your kids to snap it off at the wall, then you can use a male to female cable from the wall to the splitter.

Plus they have every adaptor you could ever need like PS0620 or PS0622

Alternatively you could use a splitter with F-Type connectors (the one on the back of the TiVo). You would then need 2 new cables, one the same as the TiVo cable you already have (F-type to B.L.) and one F-Type to F-Type.

+ 1 to this.

You need a standard splitter (Jarcar/DSE will have them). You may need to replace your flyleads so they are all M-M. Your wall plug should be female (unless you just have a cable coming out of the wall with a male plug). Jaycar stc sell gender changers if you need them too.

I will try and clarify:

I need a (IN) 1 x Female to (OUT) 2 x Male Coax splitter

The external UHF antenna coax cable from the Wall (NOT A SCCKET) ends in a Male connector,
the two (normal boring ext cables) extension leads from the TV and TiVo end in a Female connector (Just like the TV/TiVo coax IN has a Female connector)

Phil :)

EDIT:
Normally it would be just a simple connection of "the cable from the wall straight into the TV"
If the TiVo had a ant loop port this wouldn’t be an issue!!

Go and sort through the TV connecter section at Jaycar, Bunnings or Mitre 10 Mega.  You should find the parts you need. i.e. a splitter and suitable adaptors (m-m, m-f, f-f etc). You can also get m-m, f-f, and m-f extension cables as previously mentioned.

Yes, it is remiss of Tivo not to have supplied the loop through, which every other PVR does and also VCRs did. Nearly everyone must require one.

If you're struggling for signal level then I'd suggest one of these powered splitters from Jaycar.

http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productResults.asp?keywords=LT3288&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT.x=32&SUBMIT.y=9

If you don't have a store handy they sell on-line.

It is fitted with F connectors (the screw type like the Tivo has), but comes with adaptors to PAL (normal TV type).
However these are Female sockets, so you'll need a couple of Male-male adaptors. Catalogue link:
http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productResults.asp?keywords=PS0622&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT.x=0&SUBMIT.y=0

You'll also need a nearby mains feed to run it.

Hope this helps.

I think the theory is that you only watch TV via the TIVO, therefore no antenna out is required - I suspect it's a deliberate omission.

A quick browse of the Jaycar catalogue indicates you need
1 x LT3020 indoor splitter
1 x PS0620 F-F adaptor
2 x PS0622 M-M adaptor
An even better quality way to go would be to use 1 x LT3044 and the appropriate f - pal adaptors.

EDIT. And they're all available at Bunnings/Mitre 10 here in Auckland.

As others have mentioned the gender of the splitter is not material as you can just use some gender-bender adapters (M-M, and F-F) to make it work with the cabling you have...

Thanks for all the replies... I would have preferred to have just one splitter and use exsiting cables (read cheap and many) and not have to bother with gender changers and/or “same to same” cables... (I supposed it just too difficult for the manufactures to make a reverse splitter (one Aerial to two devices)?!?)

PS: TiVo... YES, there are other devices that require a UHF signal, the world doesn’t not start and stop with TiVo!

The "Same to Same" cables are the standard. A Male to Female cable is the unusual bit (they are usually only extension leads, or leads from on RF device to another) VCRs used to come with M-F leads for connection from VCR to TV, but to connect the VCR to an antenna socket, you needed a M-M cable - the main reason I think they used the M-F cable for VCRs was so that you could not muck up connecting it up. The problem you are having is becuase you have M-F cables, which the splitters were not and should not have been designed to cope with.

If you want to be cheap, get a wired splitter and rip the Female ends off the cable you have and hard wire them, but a m-m flylead should only set you back a couple of bucks.
