hey just noted last night that tv3 is now useing captions on some of there programs(fonts seem a bit small tho)but can only get them on the inbuilt freeview !they dont show up at all on my tivo,anyone know why this is.

An industry insider told me that they had to design a whole new method of captioning to cope with HD channels because the old school method of using spare lines in the vertical blanking interval no longer works with HD. It has taken a lot of work apparently and only the newer Freeview HD (UHF) decoders support it. Your Tivo probably needs a software upgrade in order to receive the captions.

Hi Guys,

Sadly we can't help you, and not because we don't want to. TV3 doesn't broadcast closed captions on their digital transmissions.

Edit: Just to make it clear, TiVo and and other FreeviewHD have the same selection.

I know ultimately the plan is to dump Teletext and replace it with a MHEG5 based solution. I wonder if TV3 are trialling something? If they are Tivo won't support it anyway since they don't support MHEG5.

Hey well im a bit confused now,so are you saying that its not tv3 broadcasting the captions but freeview? Or is closed captions and sub titles two different things?that link you posted says captions on analog and satellite but not HD,so who sends the the captions over the air?

Sorry the FreeviewHD bit is a bit misleading. A more accurate description would be "Digital Terrestrial Broadcasts'

As far as I am aware (and I do occasionally get things wrong from this side of the pond), it is up to TV3 what is and what isn't included in their broadcast stream (obviously within the DVB-T/Freeview spec)

I also noticed that my 18 month old 50" Pana started showing TV3 captions using the built in digital freeview decoder but my older Saony 32" with terrestial decoder or either of the Tivo's did not show the captions.

As my wife is deaf captions and the ability to record captioned programes is critical. No caption means the show is not watched or recorded.

The NZ deaf community have been putting pressure on having captioning across all TV, and it would be unfortunate if after all this time TV3 have introduced a non standard way to broadcast captions on their digital freeview.

I have asked for this thread to be reopend as I want to get ot the bottom of why TV3 captions can be seen on some freeview terestial devices and not on others. Ultimately I want to be able to record them on my Tivo's (or some other device)

In the meantime I will probably go and buy another 32" TV to stop the wife stealing my big TV to watch her shows on TV3.

I specifically purchased our Tivos for their ease of use and ability to record captioned digital freeview. Would not be without them now (hope Tivo struggles on in NZ somehow). It was the best $720 I ever spent, and I would gladly continue to pay up to $1,500 for a device that simple records programs and captions.

As I already replied to Red in a message, I'll repeat the basics here.

We are following this issue, I've been informed TV3 is having some teething issues with closed captions on digital terrestrial. They are actively working on it.

Personally at home we rely on closed captions as well, so I do appreciate the need and frustration when it isn't available.

Yea I know what you mean,you'd think that there was a standard for this type of thing!although I couldn't get the subtitles to begin with on my TIVO for tv3, they did show up for a couple of weeks but then disappeared again, they haven't come back,same with 3+1 channel, so a real let down at this point! Can't we get a software update for the TIVO to sort it out?

FWIW using MHEG5 or the DVB captioning spec is not "non standard" way of broadcasting subtitles. MHEG5 support is required for a device to be Freeview compliant. Tivo is not a Freeview certified device, and does not include MHEG5 support.

Eventually the entire Teletext service is going to be replaced with a MHEG5 based solution as well.

Personally teletext seems a pointless service these days.

Subtitles can be broadcast in the DVB world without the need for Teletext.

Teletext was created in a day in age where the Internet wasn't available. The technology is old and cumbersome.

I believe the BBC who were the first with CEEFAX (their name for it) have now ceased broadcasting this aged technology. Only a static non-interactive version is broadcast as the main transmission when some channels cease programming for the night.

DVB subtitles open up much more flexibility including other languages, where Teletext cannot cater.

Yep agree re teletext......but it was a lifesaver earlier on.

This thread is re captioning on Freeview terrestial channels whish have never been teletext.
