With my interest renewed I was browsing the Tivo Store and at http://myaccount.mytivo.co.nz/shop/ saw this message:

To purchase a remote, the Home Networking Package or an additional Desktop Plus Key, please follow this link where you can buy on our Australian Online Shop. Please Note: this item is only available for purchase until 31 December 2013 and activations for purchases prior to 31 December 2013 will close on 31 March 2013.

a) I'm assuming "31 March 2013" is a typo and should be "31 March 2014"
b) It doesn't specify 'which item' is only available for purchase until 31 December 2013, or why it won't be available after this date.

Does anyone know any more details? I couldnt find anything here or on mytivo.co.nz.

EDIT:

Was just clicking around on the australian store and saw it refers to the "Home Networking Package & TiVo Desktop Plus Key"

Not sure, but the home networking package seems to be currently broken. My tivos can't see one another on the same network, and I have never had this problem before in the last couple of years I have been using it.

Works for me just fine right now.  I did have the problem once not exactly sure what fixed it but try to deauthorise the tivo that has trouble seeing the other tivo at http://www.mytivo.co.nz/ from your account then add it back presuming of course you've restarted your tivos and router first.

I've seen a few mentions on here lately to patches needed to make it work after the recent update.

Perhaps it is the first stage of phasing TiVo out of the AU/NZ market? I hope they declare why 31 December 2013 is the last date.

If the system has bugs they would have disabled being able to purchase it straight away until such time as it was fixed. It will be a very sad day especially with the likes of those who have invested a bit in multiple devices of the years. Meanwhile TiVo goes from strength to strength in the US with multiple models feature sets. Sigh...

I haven't used the Tivo for much more than an STB, but the Home Networking Package might be useful if I actually bothered to use the Tivo to its potential.

Do I buy it now and activate before March just because I think I might want to use it later?
Or do I settle for knowing I wont have that functionality..

I would only buy it for connecting two Tivo's myself.  Not for the Desktop functionality.

The home networking package is no longer available from the store and the activation message has been updated to:

"Please Note: Home Networking Package and Desktop Plus Key activations will close on 31 March 2014"

Definitely looks like they are phasing out this feature.

So can Tivo be clear.

Is the Home Network Service ending for existing Tivo users with active accounts?

Or is the ability to activate unactivated HN services ending?

So it is Service or Activation that is ending?

The desktop functionally is fantastic for transfering from the media PC to the Tivo's so we can watch downloaded content

Related to this, I've been running two TiVo's for about 3 years, with the HNP no longer available (never got around to buying it, only now decided it would be of value), is there any alternative? Happy to considered modifying the TiVo if that's the answer.

My primary purpose is to record content on the TiVo, and move it off onto another device for storage there.

Overseas consumers all refer you back to PyTiVo but I assume this still requires the 'media access key'?
