Just bought a TiVo online. Trying yo wean myself off Sky now that it has lost the European Rugby and EPL.......
However, the one I got did not come with a wireless adaptor.
I had one that I had plugged into an old, old wireless-less desktop and it had worked fine in the PC ......but plugged it inot the back of the TiVo and it did not seem to work
Do I need the special TiVo one ?

Pretty sure you need a TiVo one. I have tried a third party one but it wouldn't work, assume that it required software to run that it can't install.
The TiVo one, just works out of the box

I thought they came as standard?

Maybe as standard but bought one on TradeMe and the guy had an ethernet cable connection and no wireless adapter (should have asked before I bought it).
My modem is 2 rooms away and my wife would not take kindly to cables running that length.... so looks like I will need the TiVo adapter..... bugger

Im not sure where you ordered it from, but when Telecom sold them they came with wireless adapters. But I believe they weren't standard to be included.

You could try find a WiFi to Ethernet adapter, as the TiVo has Ethernet built in. That would do the same job and probably be cheaper than a TiVo branded WiFi dongle.

We lost our TiVo dongle, I tried numerous Wifi dongles in our TiVo and none worked, finally purchased one in Australia.

We've got at least one of these wifi dongles hanging about the house, as we haven't needed either of them with both TiVOs being located next to switches.

You'd be welcome to one of these at a small cost to cover shipping, handling etc - though my sons will be disappointed to lose a "walkie-talkie" toy! PM me if interested.

I have a brand new one that came with one of my Tivos. It has never been used but I assume it works.

You can have it for $10 incl courier delivery if you really want it.

I believe it supports 802.11b/g

If I was in your position though I'd probably setup a wireless bridge to where the Tivo is and use this for other connections too.

Hey there, I'm sure I have one of those just sitting in a box in my garage gathering dust (it's brand new, never been opened) - it was thrown in when I bought a Tivo off TM a couple of years ago. I'll dig it out tonight and if it's what you're after you can have it for the cost of the postage.

I used one for a while with my Series One Tivo.

You basically install a wireless access point and configure it to extend your network. It gives you a number of ethernet ports and instead of using an ethernet cable to connect to the rest of your LAN it is done over wifi.

It is a good solution but can be a bit fiddly to get the right software running on the two access points and there are also throughput implications for your wireless network.
