a good question, the analogue RGB/Component standard does support HD, but weather this is actually supported by the Tivo is another question.

I've had a quick look around the web, but there is a distinct lack on information that says what the tivo is capable of.

thanks.

their own instructions are a mess.

the printed quick guide says component video output jacks are for high definition.

then on their website they say "transmits standard definition picture signals ".

guess i'll have to try and see....

One if the issues is there is no clear standard for Hi definition, if I recall composite is good for 576i at best.
You will not get 720 or 1080 out of it.

The picture will be better than component however.

I know enough to be dangerous

I think you've got yourself crossed up there. Composite will do 576i at best. Component is capable of full HD, but can't enforce copy protection like HDMI can. Therefore, many vendors and content providers won't allow HD over component because of the potential to Pirate it. Not sure what the situation is with Tivo as I've always connected mine through HDMI.

Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz

I would pick that the component output is SD only due to tivo's half half attempt at copyright protection

In Australia the TiVoHD will output 1080i on the component output.
In New Zealand it will output only 720p on component (will do 1080i on HDMI).
Most frustrating.

We have two TiVoHDs, one connected with HDMI, the other with component.

thanks guys.

hooked it up via component thru my avr and it looks awful  !

barely better than sd - fuzzy, poor colour, generally yuck.

will try to find the breakout plug for my tv and try direct connection.

Are you sure you used component, and not composite ? Component needs RGB cables, composite uses one yellow cable.

Component should be so much clearer than composite - have an Xbox360 running via component thru a Yamaha Receiver, and even the tiny stats panels on games is pretty clear, certainly not a fuzzy blob as you would get via composite.

Try going direct to your TV via component, rather than the AVR - ahh the breakout plug mentioned ...

Though it could be the Tivo downgrading the signal to 576i to enforce HDCP. Stupid Freeview. But not freeview itself.

definitely component !
three video plugs - red, green, blue
not an av noob

i suspect tivo is doing something funky as i've had analogue vhs and laserdsic players hooked up to the avr and they have played as fine as those old formats can be.

no luck finding that pesky breakout plug but no probs - a replacement tivo has arrived from hybrid.

here's hoping it works and isn't doa like the last replacement !

tongue-out

Well I guess the (short term) future of TiVo is looking good if Hybrid are still sending replacement units to replace faulty ones.

just unpacked the "refurb", again covered in the previous users fingerprints and not showing any signs of refurbishment - they didn't even clean the fan !

plugged it in and it works !

my elation lasted barely 5 minutes before the green power light went blinkity-blink and the screen went dead.

fan is still on but nothing on screen through any video connection.

so unless the unit miraculously revives itself over the weekend, i'm done with tivo !!!

Wow. That's some really bad luck you've had. Thankfully my four are going strong. Only a drive and a fan replacement so far!

ps. found my panasonic component video dongle-thingy and can confirm...

picture quality is a little bit better than running thru the avr,

but it is definitely locked to 576i - standard definition.

buggers.

ime only the non-fv compliant stb's like the early dracos give you hd thru component.

The non HD output of Tivo is goverened by Freeview requirements. The same is true of other Freeview units with some exceptions from early on in Freeview's 'life'.

ILovemusic if your Tivo is showing the blink-blink symptom - gets to the main screen on boot-up and then shows a blank screen shortly afterwards I think I know what that problem is.

It's a 5 minute fix and I'm happy to have a crack for free. If it is what I think it is (the small crystal on the main board) - info on this fix supplied by the Tivo Dr on my own unit - successfully fixed.

See where the fan leads connect to the main board - remove and replace the crystal next to it right hand side. This is a heat sensor and when it blows it cuts out the screen shortly after start-up.

You cover mail both ways and I'll do the fix to save it from trash!

TiVoHD is not Freeview New Zealand certified. It's probably more likely that TVNZ just chose to have it that way. Ironically it is Freeview Australia certified, and yet they have 1080i output on component.
