Hopefully this will be of help to anyone considering purchasing a used Tivo off Trade Me.

The Tivo can only be activated once.

You can create an account on Tivo using the 15 digit number but the Tivo will remain registered to the original buyer.

Once you are registered you can merge the sellers account with your new account through your Tivo Dashboard. To do this you require the sellers original email address and password they originally activated the Tivo with.

My own personal experience is that the Tivo is up and running with program guide info and all functions accept I have no Media Access Key and can't take advantage of the Home Network option or remote record through Tivo Genie.

From what I can tell it looks like the original seller never bothered activating the Home Network option and I can't do it without getting their original registration details to merge the account and then activate the Home Network. Update: Home Network Activation, you need to activate your Home Networking Package by the 31 March 2010 to ensure you get it for free.

If buying, you require the sellers original email address and password they originally activated the Tivo with to transfer full ownership to you.

If they have concerns about providing that information ask them to change their details (email and password)to a disposable email account through the Tivo Dashboard online. And then pass on to you.

The trials and tribulations of Tivo customer support.

Phone contact with the Tivo Help desk from the previous owner and myself has proved fruitless. I have submitted this through the online support:

"This Tivo has changed ownership and the email used by the previous owner is not registering when I go to merge accounts through the Dashboard service.

You can contact the previous owner on xxx-xxx-xxxx to confirm.

I need this switched over to my account ASAP so I can activate the Home Network Option and gain the Media Access Key for use before 1 February.

At this time I have no Media Access Key option in Messages and Settings> Account & System Information > Media Access Key

I also have no access to Tivo Genie due to no Tivo being registered against my User details:

"You currently have no devices attached to your account. If you believe this is an error please contact TiVo support team."

Please feel free to contact to me if you need any further information."

a small ray of light regarding the free home networking package issue:

"Offer ends 24 March 2010 (and you need to activate your Home Networking Package by the 31 March 2010 to ensure you get it for free)." <~~~ off the telecom website.

best of luck with the rest of it... there should certainly be some process in place to facilitate a change of ownership!

Thanks for that. I had January 31 stuck in my mind for some reason. Have updated original post with correct deadline.

I will update this thread with progress (or lack there of!)

With a lot of help from the original owner I got the ownership changed.

We found the fastest and most informed help came from the support email function rather than trying to talk to the Manila help desk who seem very reluctant to forward you to Hybrid support.

Good luck if you go down the pre-loved Tivo road!
