I ask the TiVo box (NZ Telecom) to keep a program until I decide to delete it.
It says that there isn't enough space to record an existing program that is scheduled to record. Why?

(No wonder, some programs haven't been recorded)

From TiVo I cannot tell (because there is no meter), but from kmttg it says (and I told it I had a 320gb hdd):
Keep until Deletion: 50%
Keep until space needed: 11%
Free: 39%

I have 58 programs using 188 gb, and 132 gb free.

How come, there is not enough space?

The mathematics says that there is plenty of space.

What is going wrong?

This may be a totally silly question but is it possible that the TiVo pre-allocates the tuner and drive and the one it is allocating to is full?
In which case, will the unit allocate it differently if you switch to the other tuner before setting the recording. As i said, it is probably a silly idea and I am sure TiVo works on a more balance system than that. However i had the not enough space warning not long after receiving the unit and I was nowhere near full and have not seen it in ages and am fuller [drivewise] than I was then.

My only other thought was that perhaps it isn't emptying your recently deleted items or clearing your suggestions folder to allocate more space.

I have deleted all the programs in the recently deleted items folder - manually.
Some went back to November 2009.
Tonight I decided to set a program so that it was to be deleted when I decided it was to be deleted and the TiVo told me that a program in the future was not going to be recorded.

I do like the TiVo but my patience is being sorely tested.

PS I have switched off (and some time ago) the auto suggestions.
