More likely trying to boost sales that have so far been pityful!! If they had launched at this price i would have bought one over my MagicTV. Oh well thier loss!!

That (what TheFatMould said) or TVNZ OnDemand is on PS3 and pretty much not too far to go, PlayTV for PS3 be out this year (from my source)... and PSN will soon offer Movies rental (premium PSN services)

Is the hard drive easily upgradeable like in other tivo machines?

It can be done, I don't know if you would say 'easily' though. At the very least you'll void the warranty. I'm not overly bothered because everything I'm in no hurry to watch is stored on my server.

The drop is not unexpected, I spread my payments over 2 years on the basis that if there was a price drop, at least there might be a slight chance that they extend something to original adopters.
I guess they won't.

Ahh well.

TVOD on the PS3 is pretty good, my connection isn't all that great due to being uncapped/managed but I haven't seen any pausing. Although this is possibly because the picture quality isn't great, not much better than SD transmissions, even when I select the High Quality option. I started to watch The Pacific to see what it was like and it was pretty blurry. Just as well my TiVo records it for me in HD :)

There is also the option of adding an "official" external 1TB drive to increase storage space

I am pretty sure you have a case for getting it reduced under the sale of goods act. Assuming the price has actually dropped officially and you only bought it last week.
A lot of companies offer their own guarantee that if the price drops within a set period, they will honour the new price. i assume this is because they would be aware that the price was going to fall when they sold it to you and it looks like bad practice.

I remember the old LV Martins ads with Mr Martin [Junior] in which he used to state that if within a month they drop the price, that they would refund you the difference.

Yes easy as and much better than having an external drive hanging off the back. Mines 1TB which is 400hrs HD or 800hrs SD
