any ideas on how to check if you're on the latest software update for Tivo, or how to force it to check for updates/install etc

I only turn 3G WiFi on in my house about once a week to let the EPG sync

TiVo Central > Messages & Settings > Account and System Info > System Information
If you are not on version 11.3b5-01-2-663, do the below steps.

TiVo Central > Messages & Settings > Settings > Network > Connect to the TiVo Service
Force two connections to the TiVo service.

Reboot the TiVo, this should start the installation process.

That's what worked for me anyway.

HTH :)

Be aware if you only turn your wifi on once a week you will miss any changes in EPG that happen between updates. With the rate programs move around the TV schedule you really need wifi on all the time. It only uses a minuscule amount of data. The other disadvantage in not having wifi on is that you cannot use the remote record feature. It si really handy if you are away from home to be able to contact the Tivo and tell it to record something that you had not set for record.
