I picked up a Tivo and was wondering if I get the HNP would I be able to plug media drive into usb port and play files from that drive.  Or do you have to copy them to the Tivo

Unfortunately I think the answer is no to both those ideas.
With the HNP you can copy off the TiVo to your PC, but I don't think you can go the other way.
I may be wrong, but I don't think there's any way to use your TiVo to play media from any other source.

Cheers,
Joseph

You can use TiVo to stream music from a PC or Mac.

And with TiVo Desktop Plus or pyTivo you can transfer video files to your TiVo.

You can transfer them, Tivo will play a lot (but not all) video formats

Yes, we went back to using XBMC on the Xbox. I haven't tried pyTiVo yet but apparently it supports more formats than TiVo Desktop (it must transcode them).
