As far as lenses go, the ones to which he refers, they are never referred to as electronics, despite having some electronic function. They are glass which, if looked after, will not deteriorate with age. The comparison to which I was referring was merely a way of of identifying my thoughts on the matter, which is to buy the Professional lens, even though it is second hand as it will almost always be a better lens.

BTW, if you applied my analogy to your electronics it would be more like would you buy a second hand genuine iPhone or buy a cheap new copy of that phone.

the problem is, sigma Art is at least equal in glass, if not better (if you can tolerate double shadow bokeh in certain situations), than both Nikon and canon.
the only thing Nikon/canon have over the sigma Art series is
- (probably) better bokeh
- (probably) more reliable electronics as all 3rd party lenses are reverse engineered for autofocusing
- (probably) better build quality

the thing that sigma art has over both Nikon/canon is
- far superior sharpness (which might not be what some photographers are after)
- much cheaper

think of it as Samsung S5 vs iphone 5S

I'm not quite sure you're accurate on the sigma's having far better sharpness. I own a couple of Canon lenses and have found them to be better all round than the sigmas.

thanks, glad to know reliability wise, it might be ok.

now my only worry is autofocus. which I know canon should be close to 90%, whereas sigma ... hmm ... ?

sdav: I'm not a professional but have been using a Sigma along with various Cannon lenses for years. Because of this neither have been hammered in the way a pro would. With that said I have had no issues with my Sigma lens. I'm not a pixel peeper so have never really cared too much about image quality in the corners at 100% crop and all that jazz so could not comment on that sort of thing.!

this is one reason why I bang my head on a brick wall when tom dick and harry shoot with an SLR and post out of focus pics on facebook. I googled Timmay's 7D autofocus and came across this thread where is problem is the amateur shot in auto selection of focus point using a large aperture and complained the $2000 camera was blur! Which I'm sure wasn't Timmay's issue by the way, it's just real bad luck and which might be a blessing in disguise as I am envious of my Nikon buddy too!

A second hand lens makes it worst house, L series lens makes it best street. That's the analogy. He was referring to professional quality lens which would suggest to me that it was an L series, as opposed to a sigma to which he gave no other reference, so presumably not the art series.

I see ... ok. one vote for 2nd hand L then. that guy has no receipts. I wonder if Canon Australia keeps its serial numbers for out of warranty special treatment. I'm guessing no.

I'd go with the Canon L, personally. I've only ever bought NZ new bodies & lenses, so YMMV.

Canon New Zealand offer 2 year warranties on Lenses purchased after November 2012, Australia still offers only 1 year. Canon New Zealand will honour warranties for both Australia and New Zealand.

Duh, some people have no idea how cameras work. I always used single shot AF (not servo/continuous focus), single centre focus point.

I know. There is a spot on the wall for me to bang my head for when out of focus pics are posted and admired much. My pet hate.

At this stage I am probably buying the best house on the worst street for the cga warranty as similar cga warranty costs more than double.

Plus I love sharpness. Now if only it will focus well ... Fingers crossed ...
