Although the diopter will be worse, the extenders can worsen image quality from misalignment of lens through an extra joi nt, light leak at the joins, and internal reflections in the barrel. Most of these only occur in cheap extension rings.

Get the tamron 90mm 2.8 VC. It's on par with the L version and nearly the price of the non L

It was shot around 1:1 (may have been 2:1 though) I think, so any decent macro lens should get a similar shot.
My other macro lens is the Tamron 90mm

It's fairly decent :)
Have had it a few years, but just used an off camera flash for lighting.

Last week went ahead and got the mt-24ex to pair with it. I think it should do the job.
