Raikyn:

A couple of recent astro shots

rho ophiuchi region , using an astro camera + a canon 50mm lens

<Snip out amazing photos>

Both shot were a couple of hours of exposure time in total.

Now I know not very much about these new fangled camera thingies, but is that right - 50mm? I heard focal length changes with ..... something .... so maybe because of this 'something' this 50 mm lens is the same a 500 mm lens would be for 35mm cameras?

Somebody please explain.

Enjoying the photos muchly BTW.

Basically the focal length stays the same, as it is just the physical characteristics of the lens. But if you use a smaller sensor you only use part of the image the lens projects, so it can look a little zoomed in, so your field of view is smaller.

Example below of the same type of area of the sky.

Top would be the 50mm lens on a full frame sensor, bottom is the view I get with the 50mm lens with the camera I'm using. You would probably get a similar view using 80-90mm lens on a full frame

Another tui.  Fairly common, I know, but they're still pretty and photogenic and it's been a while since someone posted in this thread.

Isn't it crazy that there are twice as many hydrogen atoms in a water molecule than there are stars in our solar system

@floydbloke this had me going for a moment 😂

Even though the summer nights are quite a bit shorter I've managed to get out a few times for some astrophotography.

One of the latest was this the Dolphin Head Nebula, taken with an ASI294 MC camera and a canon 600mm lens. About 3hrs exposure

I've also bought another camera, so can now have 2 projects going, which should help make the most of the limited opportunities.

We’re on holiday in Canada at the moment.  One of my wishlist items for this trip was to see a bear in the wild.  Making our way back from viewing (yet another) waterfall we happened across this fella grazing on the side of the road.  Pretty damn special.

I should point out we were safely in the car, these were shot with a long lens, and black bears pretty much always ignore humans so safety risk to the bear or us was absolutely minimal.

Had some friends go mountain biking at Whistler last year and one of them had a black bear suddenly come out of the woods onto the trail in front of him.
He said he wasn't sure who was scared the  most - him or the black bear!
He's got a couple of frames of footage of the bear on his GoPro and that's it - it was all over quickly and nobody was harmed, but he said it's something he'll never forget.

I am very envious of you - I would love to be able to safely see and photograph a bear in the wild.

Well after more than two weeks driving through BC and Alberta I can state that black bears are pretty damn common.  We've got to the stage ourselves where we roll our eyes when we hit a bear-jam on the road (yes, this is a thing) and the crazy stuff people do to get a glimpse or a photo.

Today was special again though, we actually saw a grizzly.  This was at Moraine Lake.  Photo is a bit rubbish sorry because we'd come for the scenery, not expecting wildlife, and I didn't have a long lens with me.  Again safety was well controlled.   There was a park ranger there ensuring people kept a safe distance and (I assume) ready to take whatever action necessary if the bear was getting agitated or moving toward the public. Apparently this bear is still a cub (it was quite small, first year away from mama bear) and grew up in that area, and is somewhat used to human presence.

Having had my formative years in the 70's and 80's I am quite terrified of Grizzly Bears and Quicksand.

As beautiful as they are, Grizzlies terrify me, due to the movies and TV - I guess the same can be said for sharks and towering infernos.
